Temperance
A NEW FORCE AGAINST AN OLD
FOE.
Says the "Baltimore and Richmond
Christian Advocate:" There are a num
ber of strong, influential periodicals
having a large circulation, which refuse
all liquor advertisements. As a writer
on this subject says: "It is a fact not
fully appreciated that, so far as their
advertising sections are concerned, our
great magazines are rapidly 'going dry.'"
Among these periodicals we note: The
American Magazine, The Century, Collier's,
Everybody's Magazine, The
Youth's Companion, McClure's, Munsey's.
Ladies' Home Journal, Literary Digest,
Outlook. Review of Reviews. World
To-day, Saturday Evening Post, Success
Magazine, and others.
Some of these magazines not only aid
the cause of temperance by refusing
thousands of dollars' worth of advertising
annually, but also by publishing in
tneir columns strong articles setting
forth the evils of drink. For instance,
McClure's Magazine for August contains
an article entitled ' The Story of
an Alcohol Slave, as Told by Himself."
This article is a remarkable account of
a hard drinker's career for thirty years.
The author of this article, whose name
is withheld, but who is evidently a man
of ability, states that during the thirty
years he spent more than $17,000 for
liquor that he influenced twenty friends
to drink, five of whom became alcohol
slaves like himself that he was discharged
from twenty-four jobs in nineteen
years that he was imprisoned once for
drunkenness .and estimates the cost of
his slavery at $60,000. It should encourage
every temperance worker to read
the closing words of this article. As you
read them remember they come from
the columns of a large secular magazine,
ouu uui ti'jiu a cuureu paper. 11 says:
"The inexperienced and impressionable
young man in a saloon village, town or
city does not get a square deal. My definition
of a square deal is no saloons. If
there are to be saloons, teaching the
?vil8 of alcoholic drink at school, home
and churcn ought to be discontinued.
The youngster detects the inconsistency
between preaching and practice. In my
high school days I drank beer, while
studying the effects of alcohol on the
human body. I did not believe the textbooks,
for it seemed inconceivable, to
my ignorance, that such poison as it was
alleged to be should be licensed to be
sold to one group of human being. * * *
Personally, as an alcoholic liquor slave,
from whom 1 Sfifl aalnnn.Voonoi-o '-"I'
twenty four good paying jobs during
twenty years of my drinking life, I
should like to see all saloons legislated
out of existence, for the purpose of protecting
the growing youth of our nation."
