She sent some money to Ireland to pay
the passage of her sister to Boston. She
came by the Cephalonia. The girl watched
the papers carefully to see when the
steamer would arrive. At last there was

appointing to the girl, who went to her
mistress in great distress and said to her,
"The Cephalonia has got in; but, O saints
in heaven! an accident has happened to
her!" The lady took the paper, and this
is what she read, "The Cephalonia below:
she has broken her record."?Waif.
The boy was hoeing corn in a sterile
field near the roadside. A passer-by
paused to make comment.
" 'Pears to me your corn is rather
small."
"Sure," said the boy; "it's dwarf corn."
"But it looks mighty yellow."
"Course it does. We planted the yaller
kind."
"Well,. anyway, it looks as if you
wouldn't get more'n half a crop."
"Don't expect to," said the boy. "We
planted it on the shares."
The story is told of John Wesley that,
sitting at a table spread with every luxury,
he was jogged by his neighbor with
the jocose remark, "Ah, Brother Wesley,
not much self-denial here." "No," was
the calm teply, "but a fine field for Its
exercise."
Bill Nye used to tell this story of a
Frenchman who was visiting in America.
After opening his mail one morning he
wore so gloomy an expression that his
hostess asked him if he was ill. "No,
no," he replied sadly, "but I am dissatisfy.
My father is dead."
A colored preacher, in one of his pulpit
flights, exclaimed: "Brethren, the sun
may cease to shine, but I'll not cease to
shine; the stars may cease to sparkle.,
but I'll not cease to sparkle; the ocean
may dry up, but I'll never dry up!"
Dr. Osier's jest still recoils upon him.
At Oxford, on occasion of his sixty-first
birthday, an undergraduate poem ran:
Brothers, I am sixty-one,
And my work on earth is done;
Peace should follow after storm,
Reach me down the chloroform!

The Bishop of Sheffield is credited with
the following story. He had been to visit
an outlying parish in his diocese, and was
* met at the station by the rector, who,
thought the day was extremely warm, cairied
an overcoat over his arm. "You
surely will not need your overcoat today?"
said Dr. Quirk. "I know," was
the rector's reply, "but my wife Is Interested
In a jumble sale, and when I carry
things with me I know where they are."
