VIRGINIA.
Pryor Memorial, in Nottoway County:
Rev. G. M. Telford has resigned as pastor
of the Pryor Memorial church and
the Burkevllle church, the resignation to
take effect November 1.
Farmville: The Rev. Win. J. Hill, of
Gadsden, Ala., has accepted the call of
this church and entered upon his ministry
here on Sunday, September 12.
Timber Ridge: Rev. J. A. Trostle, of
Timber Ridge Church, and Rev. T. M.
Williams, of Falling Syrlng Church, exchanged
pulpits Sunday, Sept. 12. Mr.
Williams also preached in the chapel
here Sunday evening.
Alexandria: Our pastor, the Rev. J.
R. Sevier, 'has returned after several
weeks' absence, and taken hold of his
work with renewed zeal, and encouragement.
The Church has a new candidate
for the ministry, enrolled by Chesapeake
Presbytery. Rev. R. F. Kirkpatrick, of
Union Seminary in Richmond, assisted
our pastor in the Sunday morning serv
ice, Sept. 19.
Lexington: A called meeting of Lexington
Presbytery was held at the Lex'
Ington Presbyterian Church Monday
morning, Sept. 13. Rev. J. A. Trostle of
Timber Ridge acted as moderator and
Mr. W. C. Stuart of Lexington, Clerk.
Mr. M. R. Turnbull, son of Rev. Dr. L.
B. Turnbull of Lexington, was received
under care of Presbytery as a candidate
for the ministry. He left Tuesday for
Richmond to enter the Union Theological
Seminary.
New Providence: Quarterly commun

Sunday, Sept. 12, conducted by
Dr. Wilson, who gave us two good sermons;
one on Saturday. Pour young ladies
were added as members of this
Church, and five children baptized.
Dr. W. W. Moore of the Union Theological
Seminary at Richmond, (occupied
the pulpit of New Providence Church
on Sunday, the fifth instant, and his sermon
was greatly enjoyed by a large
congregation.
Richmond: Among the matriculates at

I week for the ninety-eighth session, was
Dr. Juan Ortz, of Madrid, Spain, formerly
a Catholic priest in that country.
i Shortly after setting foot in the "United
States several years ago he renounced
his church and connected himself with
Protestantism, associating himself with
the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, of
New Orleans. With recommendations

from that church he came to this city to
take a course in the seminary, with the
intention of becoming a Presbyterian
minister. Dr. Ortz is about forty years
of age.
Roanoke Church, Charlotte county: On
September 12, at a congregational meeting,
Mr Chas. E. Holt was elected and
installed ruling elder and Mr. J. H. Holt
was elected, ordained and installed a
aeacon. At tne same meeting four new
members were received into the church
on profession of faith. Two received the
rite of baptism. This makes an addition
of eighteen since the first of June, when
the new pastorate began.
Jetersville: On Sabbath, September
5, we had a most delightful service with
a large congregation. There were two
additions, husband and wife; one by let
ier, me oiner on proression or faith.
Their child was baptized. There are
others who will be received later. These
additions were the result of a meeting
held by the pastor the first week In
August, and while it was raining the
most of the time the congregations were
excellent and very attentive. The people
have been greatly strengthened and encouraged.
For all these things we give
the glory to the great Head of the

Roanoke Presbytery will meet at Hat
Creek, Campbell county, Va., on Tuesday,
October 5, at 8 o'clock, p. m. All
delegates coming by rail will be met at
Brookneal on the Norfolk & Western
and Virginian railroads. Trains arrive
at Brookneal as follows: On the Norfolk
& Western, northbound, at 10:25
a. m.; on the Norfolk & Western, southbound,
at 5:45 p. m.; on the Virginian,
eastbound, at 10.45 a. m.; on the Virginian,
westbound, at 4:15 p. m. Delegates
coming by private conveyance are

Wirt William's, S. A. Lawson's and L.
C. Asher's and will be assigned to their
homes when they reach the church.

Franklin County: Rev. P. B. Hill, the
pastor of the Rivermont Avenue church,
has been assisting Rev. C. H. Phipps in
a week's meeting at Calloway, Franklin
county. The presence of the Spirit was
manifest, and in response to the simple
invitations to accept Christ as a Saviour
and King, there were sixteen or eighteen
that took a stand. There were ten who
united with the Presbyterian Church and
others went to some other denomination.
During the latter part of the meeting
there were some who walked from points
nearly five miles distant. It was with regret
that the meeting could not continue
longer. The ingathering is the result
of faithful, prayerful, Sunday school

WEST VIRGINIA.
Holden: Rev. W. E. Hudson, the
evangelist of Kanawha Presbytery, will
hold a tent meeting at this place
beginning September 22 and continuing
for several weeks. The tent meeting is
one of the aggressive means used in this
Presbytery in its efTort to give the gos4

pel to the large number of the unchurched
and unevangelized among the miners,
woodsmen and shopmen of southern
West Virginia.
Bro. Hudson and his consecrated wife
have been untiring in their efforts and
the Lord has greatly blessed their labors.
Hundreds have heard the gospel
who never enter church doors, scorea

Rev. T. O. Perrin, of Rockport, has accepted
a call to take the chair of the
Bible and Philosophy in Austin College,.
Sherman. He has already entered upon
the work, and his address is changed,

Church, is spending a brief vacation at
Clifton Springs, N. Y.

will make their home. Dr. Wilson is
now engaged in home mission work in
Lexington Presbytery.
Rev. and Mrs. Joseph R. Rennie, of
Amelia county, Virginia, celebrated -their
golden wedding on September 14 at the
home of their son, Mr. F. F. Rennie.
Their son, Dr. Joseph Rennie, of Norfolk,
and Mrs. Rennie were in attendance, and
the Presbyterian ministers and many
friends in Richmond participated in the
pleasure of the occasion and in extending
congratulations.

It was in effect, however, a patriotic
rather than a missionary feature. The
governor devoted a great portion of his
time to a very candid, fair and entirely
irenic discussion of the causes of the
Civil War."
Montgomery Colored Manse: We have
through hard work during the summer,
by working night and day, added
five rooms and a pantry to the manse.
Also renovated .the old part. Members
iiiin menus nave aone well. Much of
the work was done by the writer's own
hands. The improvement, while It fills
a long felt need, adds much to the value
of the property. Church work has not
lagged. The Sunday school is still on
the Increase. The preaching services
are very well attended. ,
