Story Corner
Former Congressman "Private John"
Allen enjoys telling of a unique character
near nis home, known as "Jasp"
White.
"Jasp" had liv^d in single blessedness
a good many years, but finally in
the evening of his life he married, and
in due time an heir was born to him.
The day after this momentous event Mr.
Allen met "Jasp" in the street.
"I understand, 'Jasp,'" said the congressman,
"that you've a fine baby boy
up at your place. Have you decided on
his name?"
"Yes, suh," chuckled "Jasp"; "we's already
decided on -?s name?"
"What's it to be?"
"Jasp" traced one toe reflectively in
a semi-circle before him. "You know,
suh," he said Anally, "I's alius been a
pow'ful han' fer dem Scripture folks, an'
so I's decided t' name de kid after some
o' dem officers what de Bible talks 'bouut.
I's settled on de name Beelzebub."
"Beelzebuub!"
"Yes, suh, dat's de name!" announced
"Jasp" in a tone betokening finality.
"Beelzebub's a mighty fine name, suh. It
shore looks like I's aspirin' pow'ful high,
but I figgers dat boy'll shorely do credit
to his namesake!"
One day whiie waiting at a little railway
station in Virginia, Chief Justice
VVaite learned that It was the birthplace
of Patrick Henry. For a few moments

the platlorm, looking at the rugged
mountains and the clear blue sky. Then
ne exclaimed: "What mountains! What
air! I do not wonder Patrick Henry
grew here!" "Well, sah," said a negro,
"I don't know as that had anything to do
with it. The mountains hab always been
here. The air hab always been the same.
But I'll tell you, Boss, we's nebber had
any more Patrick Henry's here."
"What did you name your baby?"
"Well, at first she was a good as gold,?
never whimpered, hair all worn off the
uack of her head with lying on it,?and
we called her Serena." "Well?" "Well
since she began crying all night with
teething, we changed her name to Tuscarora."
Photographer: "Now, sir, if you'll look
a little less as though you had a bill
to meet, and a little more as though
you'd just been left a legacy, you'll be
a picture."
Mother (looking over her boy's shoulder)
: "Your spelling is perfectly terrible."
Little Son: "This isn't a spellln'
lesson. It's a composition."
He: "Prof. Skihigh is going to lecture
on sun spots to-morrow." "Well, If
I thought he could tell of a real, sureenough
cure for them, I'd go to hear
him. I freckle so easily."
