. At a recent meeting of the preparatory
students, a literary society was organized
to bear the name of the Thompson Literary
Society of Austin College. This organization
is named in honor of CapL J.
M. Thompson, who was for a number of
years and up to the time of his death a
trustee ot the college, and a warm friend
and liberal giver to the institution.
Work progresses at a very satisfactory
rate on the Y. M. C. A. hall. .Practically

and work will begin shortly on Inside

have the students' rooms, the rooms on
the first floor and the gymnasium ready

Dr. Paulus A. Irving, of Richmond; Judge

Hawes, of Richmond. Most encouraging
reports were received as to the condition
of the college. The enrolment for
the present session is larger than for
ten or twelve years past, with the exception
of one session. Arrangements were
made for the completion of the payment
for the improvements made during the

of steam heat, of acetylene gas and
of modern plumbing, the laying of granolithic
walks and practically rebuilding
the main dormitory, making it new inside
and out with the exception of the
brick walls. This dormitory is regarded
as the most complete, comfortable and
convenient in Virginia. A total of J18,000
was expended in this work. .
