PROHIBITION HURTING SALOONS.
Is the prohibition movement slowing
down the saloon business any in the
United States? Well, let's see. The Internal
Revenue figures given out at
Washington tell us that there are
twelve thousand fewer saloons in our
country today than there were twelve
months ago. This means the exit of
one thousand of these institutions every
month, or three hundred and thirtythree
every day in the year. This is going
some, if we read the figures correctly.
But this is not all. These same
Washington figures show us that we
have 680 fewer wholesale liquor houses
than we had one year ago. But this is
not all. These same figures show us
that we have seventy-five fewer distilleries
and one hundred fewer breweries
than one year ago. Yet some people tell
us that prohibition waves are receding.
Let the recession, at this rate, continue
through the years to come. Besides these
results, we have more stringent liquor
laws in most of our States than ever
before, and the sentiment against the
saloon is crowine Strnncpr and atrnnoror
with the passing of the years.?Texas
Advocate.
Since January 1, of last year, temperance
forces have been closing saloons
at the rate of about forty per day. This
is what Dr. P. A. Baker, general superintendent
of the Anti-Saloon League,
told a committee in New York the other
day. He also said that from 140 to
150 breweries had been compelled to go
out of business during the last eighteen
months. In 1908 the net decrease of saloons
was more than 15,000, and at the
present time 41,000,000 of the population
of the United States are living in prohibition
territory.?The Advance.
That is the official statement of the
United States government, for the fiscal
year ending June 30, 1909, the comparison
being with the previous year. The
drop in the production of whiskey was
4,828,268 gallons, being more than three
per cent, of the previous year's production.
The decrease in the beer item was
2,444,183 gallons, four per cent, of the
production. Uncle Sam lost nearly eight
millions in taxes, but the people are
ahead by nearly eighty millions that did
not go for beer and whiskey. If it be
true that "more liquor is consumed under
prohibition" the moonshiners must
have made rivers and ponds of it that escaped
taxation. But it is the claim of increased
consumption that is "moon
shine," and everybody knows it.
f Don't think beca me you have taken many remedies
in vain that your case is incurable. Hood's
8arsaparilla has cured many seemingly boneless
cases of scrofula, catarrh, rheumatism, kidney com.
plaint, dyspepsia and general lebility. Take
Hood's.
