JOHN F. LEONARD.
Died near Wavneshoro Va Mav 10 I
1909, aged 71. Within a few days the
congregation of Tinkling Spring church
lost a beloved pastor, Rev. George W.
Finley, D. D., and John F. Leonard, a
faithful and efficient deacon. Had his
pastor outlived this loved and honored
co-worker, his facile pen and his loving
heart would have paid him the tribute
his worth deserved long ere this.
Mr. Leonard was too ill to be told of
the death of Dr. Finley. And the first
surprise of heaven, perhaps, was the welcome
from the pastor who had preceded
him to glory.
As the younger men gathered around
John Leonard, they were impressed with
his quiet dignity and manliness. He was
respected by all for his sterling worth.
As soldier, citizen and Christian none
stood higher. The poor wer? the constant
objects of his care. To them he
ministered with a bountiful hand. They
have lost a friend, who ever carried
them on his mind and in his heart.
John F. Leonard was a member of tjjat
now famous company, commanded first by
Capt. Wm. Patrick, and afterwards by
Captain McClung, Company E of Stuart's
immortal regiment. In Company E
he rode in the first "set of fours" from
Harper's Ferry to Appomattox. Boot to
boot with men like E. G. Fishburne and
D. W. Drake, as brave as the bravest.
No other "set of fours" did more to win
laurels for our southland than these men.
They made history, and then with dignity
and honor retired to the humble duties
of private life. In his last delirium
he called to a beloved brother by his
bedside: "Don't go to sleep, but keep a
close watch on the enemy, so that they
will not surprise the picket post." Thus
illustrating the characteristics of his
whole life?"watchfulness and fidelity."
Of the twenty-six surviving members
of his company living in Augusta county,
twenty-one followed his body to the
grave, among them his captain and two
lieutenants.
Borne by his comrades-in-arms, and
surrounded by a great number of friends
and relatives, his body was laid to rest
in the beautiful cemetery of the church
he loved so well and served so faithfully.
There he sleeps in peace, waiting the
sounding of the archangel's trumpet.
