THE PRESBYTERY OF MARYLAND
Met in Franklin Square Church, April 19,
and was opened, at the reqxiest of the
moderator, Ruling Elder C. H. Dorsey,
with a sermon by the Rev. Harris E.
Kirk, D.D., on John 5:44?"How can ye

Rev. Dr. Harris E. Kirk was chosen
mederator, and Rev. Homer H. Taylor
temporary clerk.
Dr. W. H. Woods was appointed a committee
to bear the greetings of this Presbytery
to the Presbytery of Baltimore,
in session in this city.
Rev. Charles Myers, of the Presbytery
of kanawlia, and Rev. G. A. Banslin, of
the Presbytery of Baltimore, were invited
to sit as corresponding members.
The Request of Rev. A. R. Bird, pastor
of the Laurel Chuych, that his pastoral
relation to that church be dissolved on
account of his long continued ill health,
was granted. Mr. Bird has had a remarkably
successful pastorate in this
church, succeeding in bringing it up to a
point of activity in work and liberality
in giving which wuuiu nave Deen aeeiued
impossible before he was ordained as its
pastor. He had endeared himself to the
whole Presbytery by his earnest devotion
and winning personality, and it was with
sincere grief that the Presbytery recognized
the necessity of acceding to his request.
A Report from the Woman's Presbyterial
Union, showing tne earnestness of
the women of the Presbytery in Christian
service", evoked warm approval. The
report of the Committee on Proof Texts
to Standards, recommending their adoption,
was adopted.
Eethesda Church was chosen as the
place of the fall meeting, September 27.
A Popular Meeting in the interest of
foreign missions was held Wednesday
evening, and after the report by Dr.
Woods, the chairman of Foreign Missions,
addresses were made by Dr. Dudley,
who had especially interesting things
to tell from his personal knowledge of
missions to Mexicans along the border,
and Rev. James S. Webster, M.D., of the
Chinese, among whom he has been a missionary.

WINCHESTER PRESBYTERY
Met in regular stated meeting in Winchester,
Va., April 19, 1910, at 8 p. m.,
and was opened with a sermon by Rev.
W. W. Edge, from Prov. 29:18.
Present and enrolled during the ses,
sions, nineteen ministers and twentythree
ruling elders.
The Rev. H. C. V. Campbell was received
from Montgomery Presbytery.
The Rev. S. I. Woodbridge, D.D., a
member of the Kiang Cheh Presbytery,
China, was introduced and invited to sit
as a corresponding member. He made

The Report of the Committee on Evangelistic
Work was received, and showed
good work done during the year by the
evangelistic pastors elected to do that
work.
The Following were elected to do
evangelistic work during the ensuing
vear: The Rev. Messrs. F. J. Brooke, J.
H. Eacy, J. E. Triplett. W. W. Edge, J. C.
Siler and J. Hoge Smith.
Presbytery Ordered that the week beginning
October 23, 1910, be designated
as "Union Seminary Week," during
which the effort will be made to present
the needs of the seminary in all our
churches; that our ministers he urged to
give the committee their services for at
least one Sabbath, and as many days fol2

lowing as may be necessary to canvass
a congregation.
The Reports showed progress during
the year. Much time was given to the
consideration of home mission work.
The Home Mission Committee recommended

have a pastor's whole time.
The Rev. J. F. Leeper was elected as
evangelist of the Presbytery and asked
leave to resign as pastor of the Piedmont
Church that he might accept this
new work.
Presbytery declined to consent to any
change in the present method of paying
expenses of the commissioners to the
General Assembly.
Presbytery Adjourned, to meet in adjourned
meeting in Romney, W. Va., May
10, 1910, at 8 p. m., and in regular stated
meeting in Moorefield, W. Va., Septem

ABINGDON PRESBYTERY.
Met at Pulaski, Va., April 19, 1910. The
opening sermon was preached by the retiring
moderator, Rev. Wm. Crowe.
There were present twenty-three ministers
and twenty-three elders.

moderator, and Rev. S. 11. McBride and
Rev. W. W. Arrowood, clerks.
Dismissed: Rev. E. S. Morton, to the
Presbytery of Seattle.
Corresponding Members: Rev. J. E.
Booker, of Lexington Presbytery, and R.
F. Kirkpatrick, of Mecklenburg.
The Presbyterial Sermon was preached
by Rev. R. G. Matheson, on the subject,
"Family Religion." Presbytery appointed

Mr. M. A. Bar bee, of Abingdon, was
elected a trustee of Stonewall Jackson
Institute.
Mr. W. L. Carson, son of Rev. W. W.
Carson, of Tazewell, was taken under the
care of Presbytery.
Revision of Proof Texts: The work of
the Assembly's Committee on Revising
the Proof Texts of Confession of Faith
was approved.
A most interesting meeting was held
Thursday evening in the interest of home
missions. After the reading of the yearly
report by the superintendent, addresses
were made by the evangelists now laboring
in the mission fields. The promising
school at Grundy was heartily endorsed,
by the Presbytery and all of the churches

chairman, Rev. Joseph R. Sevier, fine
use of the lantern, presenting, by this
means, the subject in about one dozen
churches last year.

Organization: Rev. M. B. Porter was

Sermon and Communion: The opening

the communion of the Lord's Supper.
Received: Rev. D. Clay Lilly, D. D.,
from Orange Presbytery, and Rev. Walter
W. Bain, from Greenbrier Presbytery,

and Pryor Memorial Churches, respectively.

Manchester Church was changed to Porter
Street, and of Caroline to Milford.
Presbyterial Sermons: Dr. Rice
preached the Presbyterial sermon on
"Inspiration." "Family Religion" was
chosen as the subject for the fall meeting,
with Dr. Lilly as preacher and Dr.
Fair alternate.
Proof Texts: A report, carefully prepared
by Dr. Hursman, was adopted, declining
to adopt "the Proof Texts as a
whole."
Expenses of Commissioners: Consent
was given to the plan of having the Assembly
