"632 THE
THE FIVE POINTS OF CALVINISM.
Under this title there is just issuing
from the press of the Presbyterian Committee
of Publication, Richmond, Va., a
little book by Rev. S. A. King, D.D.,
L.L..D., professor of systematic theology
in the Texas Presbyterian Theological
inn y, cti. nuaiiu.
The subject is handled with characteristic
lucidity and iorce. The timeliness
of the publication is recognized in the
fact that the numerous Calvin memorial
celebrations occurring during the past
year, ajid the extensive interest they
have aroused in the minds of friends and
others have created a desire to possess
in succinct, yet readable, form a discussion
of those doctrines which dominated
the reformation, which resisted the assaults
of the centuries, and to which the
large majority of Protestant Christians
give their unqualified assent today.
That this work is admirably adapted
to meet this want a careful and pleased
perusal of the manuscript convinces me.
It is the kind of discussion that one
reads with the feeling that the author is
competent to speak on the subject; that
he is dealing with truths that have
woven themselves into the texture of his
mind and heart; that no cloud of intellectual
speculation or spiritual unrest veils
the clearness of his vision; that he
moves among these revealed certainties
that have produced and sustained the
spiritual giants of every generation. The
work, therefore, will have the cordial ap
provai oi tnose wno hold to these doctrines,
and command the attention and
respect, even of those whose habits of
thought lead them to different conclusions.
The order of treatment is logical, viz.:
I. Original Sin. II. Election in Christ.
III. Particular Redemption. IV. Efficacious
Grace. V. The Perseverance of the
Saints.
In Lhe setting forth of those "secret
things" which belong peculiarly to God,
as in Chapters I., II. and III., no effort is
made to explain why God is what He is,
or why He works as He works, but the
great facts of sin and redemption are
presented in a manner that shows conclusively
that the confessional statements
are in harmony with revealed
truth.
When he comes to presentation of
"Efficacious Grace." that mighty work
wherein the "renewed will" thrills in
conscious response to the woolngs of the
Spirit in "Effectual Calling," the author
manifestly speaks from a heart rich in
blessed experience as he testifies to this
"grace of God."
The soul of the devout reader is made
to throb anew with the Joy of this redemption,
while in the unregenerate who
reads and meditates there must surely
be awakened a desire to be made a partaker
of this great salvation.
