THE COLLECTION FOR SCHOOLS
AND COLLEGES IN THE SYNOD
OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
The last General Assembly appointed
the month of June for the Synodical collection
for Schools and Colleges. Ac- ,
cordingly the Synodical Committee wish ;
to call the attention of the churches in
the Synod of South Carolina to this collection,
and to urge the pastors and sessions
to have it taken on some Sabbath
of the month.
Your institutions need liberal support,
and the need at present is very urgent.
The committee would ask for $5,000,
which is about twenty (20c) cents per
member for the entire Synod.
The receipts are used to defray the
current expenses of the Presbyterian College
of South Carolina and Davidson, and
to pay the Presbyterial scholarships at
Chicora College.
Brethren, this is a great cause, and
your Institutions very sorely need the
money. Will you not endeavor to secure
a liberal collection, which will so materially
help these worthy institutions?
We call upon every pastor and every

shows the present prosperity of the
Richmond institution. With seven able
professors in the faculty and seventy-one
young men in its classes, and a physical
equipment both beautiful and finely
adapted to its purposes, the institution
has the men and the materials for the
best work. Of the seventy-one students
only thirteen are in the Senior class,
while the Middle and Junior classes num
ber thirty and twenty-three, respectively.
Virginia furnishes eighteen of the list,
and North Carolina sixteen. Davidson
College leads the college roll, with twenty-nine
of its former students; HampdenSidney
coining next with eight. East
Hanover Presbytery's nine and Orange's
five head the Presbyterial roll.
"Dear Old Louisiana" is the name of a
song, a copy of which the author has
kindly given us, now becoming quite
popular locally. The words are by Dr.
Frank H. Field, a deacon in the First
Presbyterian Church. New Orleans, and
the music by Mrs. Bessie H. Greathouse.
