Z PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOI
PRESBYTERIAN EDUCATION IN ,
SOUTH REf>RRIA
Whether judged by its area, population
or wealth, the greatest half of the State
of Georgia lies south of the city of Macon.
Of this half, perhaps, the most
prosperous is that section known as the
"wire grass." The vast "pine barrens,"
mentioned by De Sotos historians as I
peculiar to it, have brought great wealth |
to it. With the disappearance of these
"barrens" has come a great agricultural I
development. Its lands have been found j
peculiarly adapted to the growth of longstapled
cottons, sugar cane and sweet '
potatoes, and these crops are being
grown w"ith success and nrnfit \'n nm-t !
of the United States, save Oklahoma, has
had such a growth in population in the
past twenty years. Just now it is evident
another era of prosperity is setting
in; new-comers are pouring in in large
numbers and farm lands are constantly j
enhancing in value. Prosperous and j
growing towns are scattered all through
it. It is an important field for the Presbyterian
church and one in which aggressive
work is required. That her prosperity
in it has not kept pace with its material
prosperity is evidenced by the
figures from the Presbytery of Savannah,
covering a large "wire grass" territory,
whose membership today is less than one
per cent, of the total white population in
its territory and which numbers but six
self-sustaining churches. This is the
record after well nigh a century of occu
pancy. it is a significant Tact that, j
while the Presbyterian church has not |
prospered in this territory, the Methodist
and Baptist churches have. May not
this be accounted for in part by the educational
activity of these churches? The
writer believes so, and finds the long
neglect of the Presbyterian church of
this important work to be at the bottom >
of her weakness in it. It would appear
that the thinking public is quick to give
Its support to that church most active in
providing Its children with Christian
school advantages. In the whole of
South Georgia the Presbyterian church
owns but two schools, as against five in :
the Presbytery of Savannah alone owned

by the churches just referred to, and
these two but indifferently supported.
Surely, if the prosperity of the church
depends in any degree on her educational
activity, it is high time she were
awake and doing. If she is ever to come
into her rightful heritage in this attractive
territory, ever to regain her lost
prestige as an educational power in it,
she has no time to lose. With Agnes
Scott College cared for, the church in
Georgia can well afford to turn her eyes
southward.
