Mrs. Pryor's daughter, Mrs. Rice, once
attempted to introduce William Cullen
Bryant to a class of poor white boys she
was teaching at a night school in her
home on a plantation in Virginia. She
had taught them to read and write, had
given them some arithmetic and geography,
even some Latin, and was then
minded to awaken the aesthetic instincts
winch she believed must exist in the poor
fellows. She read the beautiful poem,
"To a Water-Fowl." "Now, boys," she
eagerly said, "tell me how you would
feel if you had seen this." There was
dead silence. Appealing to the most
hopeful of her pupils, she received an enlightening
response: "I wouldn't think
nuthin'." "What would you say?" she
persisted. "Wal, I reckon I'd say, 'Thar
goes a duck!'"
Dean Hole, in his Monmrios folic on
amusing story of a church collection on
a Sunday when the congregation happened
to be unexpectedly large. The
rector, seeing that there was only one
almsdisli, beckoned to a rustic and bade
him go through the garden into the rectory
dining room and bring a dish from
the table. "Take it down one side of the
north aisle and up the other," he said,
"and then bring It to me." The rustic
came back with the dish, as ordered, and
presented it to the people on either side
of the aisle. Then, approaching the rector,
whispered in his ear: "I've done as
ye told me, sir. I've taken it down yon
side the aisle and up t'other?they'll none
of 'em 'ave any." No order had been
given to empty the dish, and It was full
of biscuits!
