I'M YERSITY.
A very interesting Commencement
season closed last night at the Southwestern
Presbyterian I'niversity, the
thirty-sixth such onward event in her
history. Addresses and performances
of a high order and an evident optimism
marked the exercises throughout.
Tho custom here is for the final examinations,
seniors and all, to occupy
the ten days immediately preceding
Commencement. There is no interval.no
"Senior Vacation" as at Ilanipden-Sidney
a generation ago, a time of stress
and anxiety to lower classes when worry
was heightened by the teasing of
idle and playful seniors tasting the
sweets of relaxation won by years of
toil. Not so at S. P. C. Examinations
were concluded Saturday, June 10, 1
P. M. That evening at 8 P. M. the
class of 1011 had their celebration in
Waddel Memorial Hall, entertained the
audience with a play in four acts? The
Resurrection. The acting was good and
presented pictures cf college life and
thought. One scene was a representa
nun in ii ssi.TYii.-e in ine college cnapei
and the impersonation of the professors
by Messrs. Cato, Scott, Rogers, and
Merrin won great applause by their
apt mimicking of Dr. I,yon. Dr. Nicolassen,
Dr. Somnierville, and the Chancellor.
The sudden appearance and
startling yell of the revived corpse
cause the fainting of a supposed sweetheart
(Mr. Cowan) in the audience at
the unexpected reappearance of her
lover. All so well acted that many
persons were long in confusion as to
whether it was acting or real fainting.
The class picture framed for the chapel
walls was presented to the chancellor.
Three strong sermons marked June 11
as a red letter day in the class his
lory. The Baccalaureate sermon was
by Rev. Isaac S. McElrov, D. D.t Col urn - "
bus, Ga., in the First Church June 20,
the text and character building the
theme. In the afternoon on the campus
under the great oaks, a little remnant
of the primeval forest of the Cumberland
hills, the Y. M. C. A. heard
liev- E. D. McDougal, Florence, Ala.,
on the panoply of God, Eph. 6: 13. It
was a clear and telling exhortation to
the militant service of Christ. Other
participants in this service were Mr.
F. D. Hoffman, president of the Y. M. C.
A.; Rev. W. C. Alexander, Rev. W. D.
.Mooney, of Birmingham, and Prof.
Deoderick, who led the singing.
That evening in the Methodist Church
by invitation of the pastor, Rev. J. J.
Stowe, the Y. M. C. A. sermon was delivered
by Rev. W. C. Alexander, of
Nashville. His theme was the Christian's
testimony, based on Genesis 19:14.
The earnestness and eloquence of a
(onsecrated life marked the discourse.
It was the voice of the prophet which
we heard. Rev. Dr. Rosebro presided
at the morning service and Dr. Sommerville
introduced the speaker of the
evening. The weather has been perfect
and the soft light of the moon has
beguiled the hours while friendships
have been renewed and young lovers
have resisted the hours of retirement.
In and out of the shadows of the broad
spreading trees* of the beautiful
Clarksville lawns, and on the galleries
las the Southern people say for
porches') the little groups have gathered
and changed. Hospitality has been
abundant hut unpretentious. Monday,
r> P. M, to 7 P. M. the senior class received
on the campus and assembled
there the youth and beauty of the community
in delightful commingling, yet
all too briefly. At the evening bout in
"Waddel Hall the Chancellor Introduced
