A Passenger That Paid.
The late L. Q. C. Lannar, former United
States senator from Mississippi, and
at the time of his death an associate
justice of the United States supreme
court, was a very absent-minded and
abstracted man.
One day he entered one of the old
horse cars that ran in Washington years
ago, walked up to the box at the end
where passengers were supposed to deposit
their fares, put his hand in his
pocket, took out a coin, and dropped it
in.
"wny, senator," said a friend, "you
put in a quarter Instead of a nicke!"
"Did I?" said the senator. "How very
stupid of me!" Then he put his hand In
his pocket again, took out a nickel,
dropped that in, and sat down with a
satisfied smile.?Ex.
