TO THE ALUMNI OF HAMPDEN SIDNEY.
Fellow Alumni: At the annual meeting
of the General Alumni Association
at the recent commencement, and at a
subsequent meeting of the officers cf
the Association, it was unanimously decided
that every proper effort should be
used to enlist more generally the interest
of the alummi in the work of the
College.
The best way to do this is to keep
them constantly informed as to what is
being done, the plans of the institution,
its progress, and its needs.
The officers of the General Alumni
Association for the year 1911-12 are:
Chas. D- McKinney, of Atlanta, President.
Don P. Halsey, of Lynchburg, ViceF
resident.
P. Tulane Atkinson, Hampden-Sidney,
Secretary and Treasurer.
R. K. Brock, G. W. Walker, P. T. AtKlnson,
and Professor Whiting, of
Hampden-Sidney, and L. S. Epps, of
Blackstone, the Executive Committee.
We are rejoiced to note the signs of
progress everywhere about "tho hiii"
and the general feeling among the faculty,
trustees, students, and other alumni,
that the institution is now doing the
best work of its career, and that the era
of its greatest usefulness lies just
ahead.
The material equipment of the institution
is the most complete it has ever
known and every part of this equipment
is being kept in excellent repair.
The granolithic walks, the Iron rail
fences about the campus the improvements
in Cushing Hall, in the way of
an excellent lighting system, water and
sewerage, and In other particulars; the
complete renovation of the inside of the
old College Church, the hanging of numerous
portraits of distnguished alumni
about the walls of Memorial Hall, the
Improvement in the lihrarv finnlnmont
and in the various laboratories are
some of the striking, visible improvements
of recent years.
The tearing down of all fences about
the old home of the president and in
front of the old dormitory of the Union
Theological Seminary, the cutting away
of some of the old shrubbery and some
attention paid to the grass, make the
campus one of the most beautiful in the
entire country- In the middle of this
beautiful fifty-acre campus is the
old home of the president, looking
just as it did during my student days,
from 1886 to 189Q, but this building
is now called Alumni Hall and is used
for returning alumni. Here the old boys
are always welcome. During the recent
commencement many of them stayed
here and took their meals in the restaurant
operated In the basement of the old
Seminary building, when they did not
have special invitations from the residents
of "The Hill" who still vie with
each other in the manifestation of the
old fashioned hospitality which has a
flavor all i^p own.
All of us can not return from year to
year to see all thiB good work going
on, but all loyal Hampden Sidney men
want to take some part in it. To that
end, 1 earnestly call upon every alumnus
of the college to send in his name
as a member of the General Alumni Association.
The annual membership fee
is only One Dollar, but if every one of
the fifteen hundred living Alumni will
contribute this dollar, the Association
will be able to do much towards helping
the old college that we all so dearly
