III Orlando: A winter tourist was
sitting on the piazza of the boarding
house when two ladies, recent arrivals,
stepped out to get their first glimpse
of the semi-tropical trees and shrubbery
that ornamented the street Their
eyes rested upon two shapely camphor
trees just opposite. Turning to the
gentleman on the porch they asked
him if he could tell them the nature
of the trees. He replied, "They are
camphor trees, madam." Whereupon
they gazed more earnestly at the trees,
and at length one said to the other:
"I don't see any camphor balls, do
you?"
Two old ladies seated side by side
in the train had been riding for several
hours through the hammocks and
pine woods of Florida. As the scenery
was all novel to them, they kept looking
intently out the car window, each
wearing a disappointed expression of
countenance, when presently one was
overheard to remark, by a fellow passenger
in the seat behind: "Well, here
we have been riding nearly all day
through these pine woods, and we have
not yet seen a single pineapple-"
"John!" The footman inclined his
head deferentially. "John, step towards
Fido, and speak a kind word to him, to
make him wag his tail. He has had no
exercise today!'?Ex.
Helen?"Of course, he clasped you in
his arms when the boat upset?"
Hazel?"Just the opposite."
Helen?"Just the opposite? What do
you mean?"
Hazel?"Why, the boat upset when he
clasped me in his arms."?Ex.
Hardup?"I'll never go to that restaurant
again. The last time I was there
a man took my overcoat and left his in
its place."
Welloff?"But the proprietor wasn't to
blame, was he?"
Hardup?"No; but I might meet the
other man!"?Ex.
Comparatively.
A Boston woman, who attained much
prominence in the campaign for woman's
suffrage, once said at a public
meeting that she thought T. B. Aldrich
was effeminate.
The remark was repeated to Aldrich
as a joke, whereupon he very drily remarked
:
"Yes, so I am?compared to her."?

Extract from a young lady's letter
from Venice:
"Last night I lay in a gondola in the
Grand Canal, drinking it all in, and life
never seemed so full before."?Lippincott
"I don't like your heart action," the
doctor said, applying the stethoscope,
again. "You have some trouble with angina
pectoris."
"You're partly right, doctor," said the
young man, sheepishly; "only that ain't
her name."?Ex.

"In what amount?"
"Oh, in varying quantities."
"Well, that may account for some
girls making better matches than others."?Pittsburg
