PLAN SCHOOL DRESSES SOW. t
Before the children begin to think of
getting copybooks and pencils for school,
mothers should not only think about,
but have the clothes ready for their
youngsters, writes Marion Morris in the
CllipiiLm In?r>>
Now is the time for mothers to plan
what clothes the children will need.
Even though you may he in the country
or at the seashore, you can easily
do this, because the lirst days of school
require practically the same clothes
the youngsters have been wearing during
vacation.
First of all, the underclothes should
undergo a severe examination. Every
little "break" should he carefully mended
and the garments that are too far
gone should he replaced. Every child
should have at least six complete sets
of undormuslins with which to begin
school.
A fresh supply of stockings certainly
will be necessary, as the child is rare
who ends a vacation with stockings in
good condition. Every child should
have at least two pairs of shoes just
for school?to he worn alternately.
It would be foolish to get new hats for
the little girls, as September will be
warm. Summer hats should be freshened
with new bows of ribbon. This is
not extravagant, as the bows can be
transferred to felt hats. The boys
should have new caps or soft felt hats.
Handkerchiefs should not be overlooked,
as vacation generally shatters
the supply. A fresh collection of hair
ribbons is also essential. Although
these little things do not seem important,
any mcther would feel very
much hurt if she heard any one remark
about her little girl's careless-looking
hair ribbons. If you neglect new ribbons
for the first day of school, before
you know it several weeks will pass by
?and every day leavPs its imprint on
old ribbons. Black satin ribbon is the
most satisfactory, as it wears well and
always looks neat. Remember, that it
is decidedly economic to purchase the
best quality.
Naturally the dress problem is the
most difficult, as school opens just inbetween
seasons. As it is absurd to
get new dresses that can only be worn
for several weeks, it is best to let your
grammar school and high school daughters
wear their summer frocks during
the first month of school. However, if
you can get navy blue serge suits (last
spring's styles') at a bargain, it will be
worth while, as their spring suits are
undoubtedly quite shabby. These extra
suits will tide them over until autumn
and winter suits are needed. And
it will be wise to get them each a demitailored
dress of serge also, as there
will be many cool days during the early
autumn. Of course, these dresses may
be worn all through the winter, as they
are very serviceable. And although it
will be all right to let them wear their
summer frocks, do not think of permitting
them to wear lingerie dresses
even, no matter how warm the day may
he, as such dresses are entirely too
elaborate. Demi-tailored linen dresses
and little colored dimity frocks are the
most appropriate. Foulard or surah
silk dresses that are not too fanciful
are also considered within the hounds
of rrr\r\f1 tna+a
Tattle girls' dresses are an entirely
different proposition, as they should
wear washable dresses all through the
