THE PRESBYTER1A
s^torp Corner
She was a charming debutante, and
e he was a somewhat serious chap. Conversation
was rather fitful, so he decided
to guide it into literary channels.
"Are you loud of literature?" he
1 asked.
* "Passionately," she replied. "1 love
books dearly."
Then you must admire Sir Walter
I Scott," he exclaimed with sudden animation.
"Is not liis 'Lady o? the Lake'
exquisite in its hewing grace and poetic
imageryV" Is it not?"
"It is perfectly lovely," she assented,
clasping her hands in ecstasy. "I suppose
1 have read it a dozen times."
"And Scott's .Marmiou", he continued,
"witn its rugged simplicity and marvellous
description.' (
"It is perfectly grand," she murmured.
"And Scott's 'Peveril of the Leak' and
h.s noble 'Bride of Lauiinamoor'?where
in tire English language will you find ,
anything more heroic? You like them,
1 am sure?"
"1 just dote upon them," she replied. |
"And Scott's Emulsion," he continued
hastily, tor a faint suspicion was begin- i
mug to dawn upon him. j
"1 think," she interrupted hastily, ]
"that is one of the best things he ever j
wrote."?Exchange.
A BRIGHT EXPLANATION.
John Barker, the town marshal of
Kurrisonville, Kan., swears that he overheard
the following conversation between
two little girls who were not yet ~
old enough to go to school: "What
makes a hors? act naughty when he sees ,
an auto?" one asked. "It's this way," '
replied the other, "Horses is used to seein'
other horses pullin' rigs, and
i they don't know what to think of 'em go(
in' along without a horse. 1 guess if
you was to see a pair of trousers walk- ,
in' down the street without a man in 'em
you'd be scared, too."
"But tbat umbrella looks so awfully
cheap aud common,'' said the customer.
"The price you ask for it is preposter- i
ous." !
"My dear sir," replied the dealer,
"i.u.ts tne beauty of tnat umbrella.' 'It's
ready the very best quality, but it is
made to appear cheap and common so no
one will steal it."?Philadelphia i ress.
An Irish vicar having advertised for
an organist, received the following reply:
"Dear Sir: I noticed you have a
vacancy for an organist and music
teacher, either lady or gentleman. Having
been both for several years 1 beg
to offer you my services."?Home Chat.
