While a certain Riohmond family
were in Europe, the dusky housemaid
acted as caretaker, and more than
once received in the dining room an
admirer in the person of one HenryMorgan,
cab driver.
One evening, as the maid and the
Jehu were making merry, there came
from the kitchen a painful scratching
sound.
"What's dat noise in de kitchen?"
demanded the maid's admirer. "Must
be a dawg tryin' to get in."
"Don't yo' worry," answered the
maid; "dat ain't no dawg a-scratchln'
at the do'. Dat's de cook a-writin' a
love letter to her honeysuckle."?
August Lippincott's.
YOU PAY TOO MUCH.
Robley D. Evans, rear admiral who
has just passed away, was a master
of sarcastic wit. A good example is
found in the retort given a pompous
New Yorker in the Fifth Avenue church
one Sunday morning. Evans had
entered the institution and appropriated
a Beat in a front pew. An usher
looked at him doubtfully, not recognizing
in him the rightful occupant. But
he took a second look at the square
Jawed, determined looking stranger
and held his peace.
Evans was alone in the handsomely
carved and upholstered section, and
oblivious to his surroundings. He
looked straight at the pulpit. Even
when a dignified, and well (tailored
gentleman hesitated in amaze at the
gate of the pew and then took the seat
behind he seemed unaware of everything
save what the preacher was talking
about.
Th well-groomed one got settled in
his seat and recovered his breath. With
a wondering glance at the back of the
Intruder's head he heaved a sigh and
then wrote on a card:
"Dear Sir: I pay $5,000 a year for
the pew you are occupying," and passed
it over.
Without a bat of an eyelash Evans
scribled this answer and sent it back:
"You pay altogether too much."?The
Advance.
SUCCESS.
"What is the secret of success?" asked
the Sphinx.
"Push," said the Button.
"Never be led," said the Pencil.
"Take pains," said the Window.
"Always keep cool," said the Ice.
"Be up to date," said the Calendar.
"Never lose your head," said the
Barrel.
"Make light of everything," said the
Fire.
"Do a driving business," said the
Hammer.
"Aspire to greater things," said the
Nutmeg.
"Be sharp in all your dealings," said
the Knife.
"Find a good thing and stick to It,"
said the Glue.
"Do the work you are suited for,"
said the Chimney.-j-Baltimore Sun.
"What'B this I hear about the wedding?
Some say the groom didn't show
up until very late."
"It wasn't his fault. He was there
but he wasn't consplcous. Seems he
got elbowed into a corner behind some
palms."?Ex.
As the train neared the city, the
colored porter approached the JovialPaced
gentleman, saying with a smile:
"Shall Ah brush yo' off. sah?"
"No," he replied; "I prefer to get ofT
