THE PRESBYTE&I1
serving for wmi years as high school
principal in Virginia, la ISO* Mr. Mapms
waa appointed a member of tns
state board of Exaiminers. This gavs
him an opportunity lor great constructive
service to tiie school system of
Virginia and also brougnt him in the
closest possible touch with eveiy day
school piobleins, both in our cities ana
in the rural sections. He served as
t resident of the board of Examiners up
to the lall of 1911, at wnich time he
took up hiB duties at the University, in
addition to hiB important work as Examiner
Mr. Mapnis has acted lor tne
past two years as Secretary of tne Virginia
Education Commission, and this
has given him additional oouortunides to
become thoroughly familiar with certain
larger phases of our school questions.
With such training and such unusual
qualihcations Mr. Maphls becomes head
of the Summer School at the University
of Virginia, and there is every reason
to expect that the school will continue
to grow and develop in the future
and render to those teachers who attend
the best possible service. This
school will not only meet every demand
of Virginia teachers, but should appeal
with particular interest to teachers
all over the South and West, and the
indications at present point to an unusually
large attendance for the session
of 191?.
SOUTHWESTERN PRESBYTERIAN
UNIVERSITY.
For a long time the Divinity School
has been in. need of some foim of ex.
erolses by means of which the faculty
and students might be brought together
to discuss topics of general interest to
drvinity students. A plan was adopted
a few months ago when the first Thursday
of each scholastic year is to be a
day devoted to this subject. It is called
"The Palmer Memorial Day."
The exercises of the last meeting on
February first were extremely helpful
and interesting. The chief paper was
read by Prof. R. E. Fulton on "The
Awakening of China." Considering the
great upheaval that is taking place in
China at this time, the subject was a
most timely one. The remainder of the
first period was devoted to discussions
of recent mission literature.
A recess of fifteen minutes was taken
between sessions. In the first part of
the second session extempore speeches
limited to seven minutes, were made by
turee aiuuenm. i ni? was rouowea Dy
reading of a selected passage of Scripture
and a hymn by the students.
Criticisms were made by professors and
Btudents after each part of the exercises.
The last item on the program was a
discussion of "The Sunday School, Its
Mission and Purpose." This proved to
be about the most Interesting feature of
the program and brought forth some
lively debates.
The Palmer Memorial Day has thus
far met the approval of all concerned,
and promises to be of great benefit to
the students in the future.

PERPLEXED.
A constant perplexity of an editor is
how to maintain satisfactory relations
with correspondents. It is not practicable
to acknowledge all the letters of
favorable or unfavorable criticism of
what appears in the paper he edits. But
no letter written with an honest purpose
fails of consideration, and the
assistance given in his work by such
criticism, which is considerable, is always
appreciated.?Congregatlonalist
