EXTRACTS FROM A LETTER FROM
MRS. W. F. JDHKU, AT SOOCHOW,
Clil.W.
(February 3, 1912.
Chang Hsiin, the Imperialist Oeneral,
who has been at Hsuchowfu, has been
sending his troops over the Sucuien
territory. One of our young preachers
was caught, because he had cut off his
queue and had it sewed on his cap.
Mr. Junkin had to telegraph to a
military official, a friend, to intercede
for him. He was released. Our queue
less city magistrate is living in Mr.
Patterson's house under Mr. J.'s piotecting
wing. Queueless men and boys
are hiding away on our compound and
at the hospital and boys' school, loday'B
paper says Suchien has been
fortified by the revolutionists,' so if
Revolutionary soldiers are there, the
poor frigntened creatures may dare
show their heads onte more. You may
wonder why they don't "get up" and
fight. One reason is, the Government
(Manchu) never has allowed citizens
to own guns. Some owned them, but?
A boy, therefore, never has gone hunting,
nor has handled a gun. So these
poor people have no way of fighting,
'today's paper also gives more hopes
for a peaceful settlement. But it will
be sometime before the country is
quiet. With this interim of no govern
ment (at leaBt with the soldiers gone
off to light), even around peaceful Soochow
and Hanchow, the robbers
abound, and up towards Luchien, where
the famine has made people desperate,
conditions are much woise. 'lhere i.practically
no danger to fore gners in
this struggle. Of course robbers may
steal our things, but they will not hunt
any of the foreigners. On the other
hand, everyone looks to them to get
the help of the Famine Relief ( ommlttee
and everyone wishes them to be
safe and undisturbed. "The darkest
hours come just 'before dawn"?China's
darkest hours are fast passing away.

\lr. Junkin and Dr. Bradley?the strain
and hard work, the drain on one's
sympathy?the dangers from fever!
But God can bring them safely through
it all. Yesterday at the monthly uuion
meeting of all churches, it was inspiring
to see the eagerness to "push forward"
to spread the Gospel. Tuey plan
to print notices of all church services
?all together on one sheet of paper,
and add an invitation to attend the
nearest church. Ihey plan a cainpa gn
also of street preaching.
The educated men are going forth to
preach. Ihere is an old man in this
city?a Northern Presbyterian?whose
two sons are in good business positions.
Ihey tell him, "You need not spend
your time working any more. We will
make the money. You go preach." So
he has an accordion and stands in any
public square and sings and preaches.
This is the beginning of a great era for
China for Christ. Oh, harvest field!
There will still be the slow, plodding,
teaching the ignorant, the trials of the
weak and faithless, the discouragements
which must ever come as long
as Satan is so powerful, but Christ's
power will be shown in the mighty impulses
which stir this nation.
"The man who is satisfied with himself
has got to be satisfied with mighty
little!"

AN OF THE SOUTH
THE DRAWING POWER OF THE
SIMPLE GOSPEL.
Is very clearly illustrated iu the experiences
of the Batesville (Arkansas),
Piesbyterian church during the past
ti-ree months^ When the present pastor,
Rev. A. F. Cunningham, took up
the work in this congregation early in
November last, after a vacancy of six
months, the average attendance at the
mid-week prayer meetine was about
thirty, which slowly increased until by
the close of the year it was about fifty,
With the incoming of the new year
Pastor Cunningham took up the questions
and answers in the Shorter
Catechism as the bases of his prayermeeting
lectures, beginning with the
lirst answer, explaining very simply the
truth taught, the scriptural authority
for the same, and emphasizing the personal
duty involved. The attendance
began to increase at once and con.
tinued until the first week in February,
the Sunday school room would no
longer accommodate the audiences and
we were forced into the main auditorium.
The interest ere.W nnnon in
intensity and was manifestly contagious.
Those attending talked of the
simplicity and Scriptural character of
the lectures, which brought others. The
attendance climbed up over the hundred
mark and continued to increase. The
Session determined to hold a series of

remedy, its ediciency, all of which were
presented in faithfulness, simplicity
and power. The result is a greatly revived
church, and, as narrated in your
church news columns last week, the nddition
of three persons on a restatement
of their faith and sixteen on confession
of their sin and profession of
their faith in a crucified Saviour. One
more was added on restatement the following
Sabbath.
So far as we can see it was the work
of the Holy Spirit, using the faithful
presentation of the simple doctrines of
the ord, making them effectual unto
the salvation of precious souls.
Many explanations of a wasted life
could be given. One of which may of'eu
include all the truth is, "He did not
