THE PRESBYTEBIA
CHINA FAMINE NEWS.
For the famine was grievous in the
land. Genesis 12: 10.
Conditions in the famine province are
most distressing. In one village, L#intse,
out of 700 persons, only 140 had bread
to eat, the remaining living on gruel
made almost exclusively of greens and
weeds. In the VVuhu district, an effort
is being made to build large dykes along
the river to prevent future inundations,
and the money paid for labor helps the
famine sufferers. Famine relief works
have been stationed in various places
with good effect, yet only a small section
of the affected district can be helpby
such means. At Pingtu, in Shang.
tung province, some of the famine Bufferers
were found subsisting on leaves
and dead dogs.
Children have been separated from
their parents, wives have lost their husbands
and are left helpless with little
ones to provide for. Besides there are
many that have been crippled or otherwise
injured in the fighting and these
add to the general sum of misery.
In addition hundreds of famine orphans
are to be cared for. The good
missionaries are grateful at the prospect
of support for the children, especially
at a time when famine conditions
nrevail throughout the country, and
when, without such provision, it would
be impossible for the missionaries to
keep their little charges. This is an
opportunity for real service in a special
field, for by helping the missionaries to
provide for these 700 children, you are
aiding the cause of Christianity in
C hina.
These distressing reports call for immediate
help.
"And the King shall answer and sa>
unto them. Verily, 1 say unto you, inasmuch
as ye have done it unto one of
the least of these my brethren, ye have
done it unto me." .Matthew 25: 40.
But whoso hath this world's good,
and seeth his brother have need and
shutteth up his bowels of compassion
from him, how dwelleth the love of God
in him?
My little children, let us not love in
word, neither in togue; but in deed and
in truth. I John: 17-18,
Remember that the China Famine
Committee state that fifteen dollars will
save a family, three dollars a life, and
one dollar will keep alive one person a
month.
God grant a liberal and speedy response
to this urgent appeal for practical
Christian sympathy, prayers, and
help.
God helping you how many will you
save to-day?

A sermon on these words heard today
brought out with great power the grief
of our Saviour, "one who knew and understood,"
over Jerusalem's neglected
opportunities and awful fate. "Shall
we," asked the preacher, "help to stanch
the Saviour's tears?" Shall we, as a
Church, see and know our great opportunity
for work in China now, or
are we so afflicted with "spiritual astigmatism."
that we will fail to see it?
Will we let this incubus of debt, which
rests upon us, blind our eyes and deaden
our hearts to thiB opportunity for which
the Church has been praying since the
days of Xavier?
"Oh, Rock! Rock! When will; thou

grace 1912. A miracle is wrought!
Anti-foreign China is anti-foreign no

places with sparkling eyes, filled with
