provement against a dead and decaying
stagnation.
It is llbery versus slavery?not socalled,
but so really.
It is political uprightness versus corruption.
it is independence against iron-trodden
submission.
It is education versus ignorance.
Last and best of all, it is Christianity
versus heathenism. Hitherto in China
religious liberty was forced from the
Chinese government, but denied in practice
in ways without number. But the
Revolutionary Provisional
.has already of its own. free will and
accord declared that it will guarantee
perfect religious freedom to all.
It Is stated on good authority that
most all of the Republican leaders
are Christians; at least, it Is well
known that a large proportion are such.
It was also stated that before President
Sun took the oflice he spent two
days in fasting and prayer.
These men in their public statements
show a degree of honor, dignity and
honesty of which the United States
.night be proud in its own oliicials.
Again, lit can be safely claimed that
.this momentous upheaval is due both
directly, indirectly and altogethr to the
influence of Christianity in China, and
is thus one of the results of our mis
sionary work Early in the history of
the Revolution it was stated that the
.ManchuB in Chinkiany said they would
iirst kill the Chinese, then the foreign,
.ers, because, they said, the latter are
the fathers of the whole movement. We
as missionaries are neither afraid nor
ashamed to plead guilty of this, charge.
It is impossible to overestimate the
direct and indirect fruits of Christian
effort already achieved in China, and
equally impossible to forecast what
there is in the future for us of blessing
and fruit.
For years idolitary has been waining
and the way has been preparing, and
there are already indications that when
the new government shall have been
established, peace restored and reforms
instituted, then there ' will begin a
great and general move toward Christianity.
It used to be predicted years ago that
Japan would become the messenger of
'the Gospel to China and the whole far
East; later, that the Coreans would assume
this otllce. But, since China has
from remote ages led the far East In
government, civilization, education, culture
and religion, she will most probably
after all become the great etaoin
from which the Gospel will go forth to
the surrounding nations.
It is our unspeakable privilege to be
a missionary in China. The work is not
in vain. Every dollar invested and
wisely expended and every effort earnestly
and wisely put forth will bring
fruit many fold.

Missions pay far more than we pan

A SERIOUS MENACE.
That the unphilosophical, useless hypothesis
of a subconscious mind should
receive support in the editorial colums
of the Christian Observer is only one
evidence of many of the rapidly spread
iub acceptance or the new psychology,
which has much of value to its credit on
the physiological and analytical side,
and much of menace when it dabble in
the metaphysics that many of its tdherents
profess not to need, and some
to condemn.
The doctrine of the subconscious mind
is not essential either to the new or to
the old psychology, strictly as such. It
has been strongly opposed even by Dr.
Munsterberg, of Harvard, who seems to
believe in almost every other new
thing; while Dr. Judd, of Yale, says:
"Such references to suhconsoiona nm_

cesses bring only confusion, and are
worse than useless in the discussion of
eperience." The doctrine of the subconscious
mind is unphilosophical, for there
is absolutely no evidence of its existence.
The doctrine Is useless, for the
facts it seeks to explain are easily and
fully explained by a known cause, brain
action. The doctrine is worse than unphilosophical
and useless, for It denies
to mind In part its territory, the distinctive
and essential characteristic of
consciousness. Subconscious mind is
unconscious mind, and unconscious
mind is no mind.

So Ebbinghaus, and others of this

and we deserve to be kicked for allowing
it. I never read a Westminster
Confession until driven to do it to find
its weak points, and discovered that
they do not exist." Like many others,
he was bitterly prejudiced against the
Presbyterian Church, as narrow, nonevangelistic,
fatalistic, and aristocratic.
But on investigation he found good reason
to change his mind, and change it
completely. As another says, "From
being one of the worst maligned and
misrepresented churches, because of
peoples' ignorance of the glorious his.
tory, principles, and content, our church
ought to lead to-day in membershiD. as
she does already in power and influence."
This booklet is brief and can be read
in fifteen or twenty minuteB. But it is
comprehensive enough for all practical
purposes. It covers about all the vital
points, and is a capital thing to put in
the hands of the rank and file. Next to
Dr. Smith's "Creed of PreBbyterians,"
it is the best work of its kind that -I
know of, and, in its brevity and inexpensiveness,
even superior to that noble
work. N. B. Mathes.
