THE PRESBYTER I A
a citizen of Grundy, introduced Mr.
Burns in a very pleasing manner. He
said, "If there is anything that we ought
to be proud of it Is this school. It caters
not to one class, but to all. It stands
for a Christian education." The sermon |
was preached on Sunday by the Superintendent
of the mountain work. Rev.
Wm. E. Hudson, in the new brick Presbyterian
church. At an afternoon service
held in the chapel of the school five
of the students made profession of their
iiiimi m v^ursi. mere nas oeen a total
enrollment of 90 during the past year,
35 of whom were boarding pupils.
Among that number was a capable, industrious
boy who is a candidate for the
ministry. A tiny orphan girl of six, who
is being clothed, fed and trained by the
school is so bright and is improving bo
rapidly as to make one feel she is worth
all the money that is invested in the institution.
The plant consists of a main
building heated by a furnace with 11
living roomB, 3 class rooms, dining room
and kitchen and two small cottages, one
of which is used for a girls' dormitory.
The total amount of land owned by the
sohool is scarcely an acre. The country
is exceedingly steep and it is difficult to
tind a large enough stretch of level land
for a building sight. This school, under
the management of Rev. P. E. Clark and
Rev. W. W. Arrowood has a fine opportunity
to send a saving influence
over the county of Buchanan. In order
to do this, however, it sorely needs a
better equipment; namely, a small lot
located btween the school and the river,
which could be purchased for $800; a
dynamo, which could easily be installed
ton account of the accessible water
power), for the Lighting of the building;
pipes and bath room fixtures, in view of
the fact that the use of a resevoir has
been offered; a dormitory for boys,
which cost between five and six thousand
dollars. The greatest need of all is
the payment of the eighteen hundred
dollar debt, which is hanging over the
school.
These sturdy mountain boys and
girls, with the finest blood flowing
through their veins, are being educated,
and reached by the Gospel. Is there
any other missionary activity which
compares with it? Are the people of
Auinguun .rresoyiery ana 01 me oyuuu
of Virginia going to ignore these pressing
needs?

on hand and the Home Mission
churches, so far as they can be grouped,
are supplied with regular preaching of
the Word. The narrative report, too,
manifested an Increased interest among
the churches.
