THE PRESBYTERY OF AUGUSTA.
Met at Crawfordville, April 10. The
opening sermon was preached by Rev.
Jos. R. Sevier, from Sol. 1:18.
I?r. It. W. Mcbnne was elected Moderator
and Mr. Chas. E. Whitney, Temporary
Clerk.
Presents Nine ministers and fourteen
elders.
Rev. "A, X. Lewis was dismissed to the
Presbytery of New York, U. S. A.
Rev. J. A. Simpson was received from
the Presbytery of Atlanta, and the following
committee was appointed to install
him at Greensboro and Penfield:
Rev. G. M. Howerton to preside, propound
the constitutional questions and
charge the pastor; Rev. Geo. F. Mason
to preach; Elder J. H. Sibley to charge
the people.
Rules for the guidance of clerks of
sessions, prepared by Rev. G. M. Howerton
were adopted and ordered to be
printed.
The Narratives revealed the fact that
all our churches are in good condition.
Only two are vacant, and these will
soon be supplied.
Rev. G. M. Howerton, and Elder W. M.
Rowland were elected principal, and Dr.
D. W. Brannen, and Elder H. B. Jordan,
alternate, Commissioners to the General
Assembly.
Our churches contributed $11,016 to
the Assembly's causes.
The Home Mission Committee was directed
to employ a Superintendent of
Home Missions; this shall be done at
once.
Presbytery voted "Yes" to the overture
of the Assembly touching the
amendment to the Confession of Faith
concerning infants; took no action on
the amendment to the form of government,
and voted "No" to the overtures
touching the judicial tribunal and the
status of Synod.
Rev. G. M. Howerton was appointed to
preach the doctrinal sermon at the next
meeting.
Milledgeville was chosen as the place
of next meeting.

PRESBYTERY OF CHEROKEE.
The Presbytery of Cherokee met In
the Presbyterian church at Calhoun,
Ga.. on Tuesday evening, April 16th,
and was opened with a sermon by Rev.
J. H. Clarke, the retiring Moderator.
Attendance: Fourteen ministers and
sixteen ruling elders.
Organization: Ruling Elder S. E.
.Tones, of Bethel, was elected Moderator.
and Rev. J. T. Wade temporary
clerk.
Foreign Missions: A popular meeting
was held in behalf of this cause, and
the annual sermon was preached by
Rev. J. H. Hardin on Wednesday evening.
The committee's report showed
that contributions and interest in this
cause had exceeded all previous years.
Systematic Beneficence: The reports
show that this Presbytery increased her
gifts during the past year to all the
causes of the Church, and that the Assembly's
Plan is bearing fruit wherever
put. in operation.
Narrative: The state of religion within
the bounds of the Presbytery as

encouraging. All the churches are provided
with the ministry of the word:
where impossible to place a mission
church in a group it is placed under
the care of the session and pastor of a
stronger church, and our elders are
given opportunity to do some evangelistic
work.

Missions received due attention, the
reports of the Standing Committees
aroused much interest and led to the
pledeo of increased effort in behalf of
these causes.
Overtures! The amendment to the
Confession of faith. Chap. 10, Sec. 3,
was answered in the affirmative. However

PRESBYTERY OF NORFOLK.
The Presbytery of Norfolk met in the
First church, Portsmouth, April 15th, at
8 P. M., and was organized by prayer
and the preaching of a sermon by the
retiring Moderator, Rev. Stuart Nye
Hutchison, from 1 Peter 4:7-11.
Rev. J. Wutkins Lacy was elected
Moderator and Rev. J. Allen Christian,
remporary Clerk.
Revolved: The Rev*. Thos. D. Wesley
was received from the Presbytery of
Elizabeth, U. S. A., ana having accepted
calls to the Campbell Memorial and
Milden churches, a Commission was appointed
to install him pastor.
Rev. J. W. Hethorn was received from
Lafayette Presbytery and took up wor.k
as Stated Supply of the Williamsburg
and York River churches.
Dismissed: The Rev. P. L. Delaney
was dismissed to the Presbytery of
Potosi.
Permission to sell property: The
Hampton church asked for and was
given permission to sell Its present
church property with the view of moving
to a more advantageous situation.
Overtures: The Presbytery adopted

the Book of Church Order as to the
hearing of appeals by Commission and
also overture as to the change in the
By-Caws of the Assembly permitting
a Judical Commission to be appointed
by each Assembly as the Standing Committees

Resigned: Rev. Charles Friend resigned
as pastor of the Belle Haven and
Powellton churches and the churches
were cited to appear before the adjourned
meeting of Presbytery to show
cause why the resignation should not
be accepted.

elected Commissioners to the Assembly

Home and Foreign Missions: The
Committees on Home and Foreign Missions
made lnterestlne reports. Rev. J.
E. Booker was heard regarding the
Home Mission work of the Svnod. The
Presbvtery spent an hour In prayer for
Foreign Missions.
Elect Infant Clause: The Presbytery
answered the overture from the Assembly
In the affirmative.
Rev. H. "W. IFlinn offered his resignation
as pastor of the T>ambert's Point
church and the church having been
heard from the resignation was accepted
to take efTect at once.
Manual: The Stated Clerk was directed
to prepare a Manual to he presented
to **e fell meeting for adoption.
Systematic Beneficences The Committee
on this cause made a report taking
en the amounts sent down by the
Svnod's Committee on the subject, apportioning
them to the churches on a
percentage basis, thus making the attempt
to meet In full the present asking
of the Assembly.

A conference was held in the Interest
of Foreign Missions. Also a special
hour of prayer for missions was set
apart and observed by the Presbytery.
The Sabbath school question came
in for its share of consideration and
interesting talks were made on this
subject.
Rev. A. C. Bridgman addressed the
Presbytery in the interest of the canvass
whiich he is conducting in. the
Synod looking to the raising of an endowment
fund for our institutions of
learning within the bounds of the Synod.
He reported encouraeYne nroeress in
this worthy cause.
S. C. Byrd, president of Chicora College
and D. M. Douglass, president of
the Presbyterian College, of South Carolina,
addressed the Presbytery in the
interest of the institutions which they
represent and each reported healthy and
encourarging progress.
W. B. Arrowood, E. E. Gillespie, with
Ruling Elders Geo. W. Boyd and R. T.
Beaty were chosen Commissioners to
the General Assembly.
An overture, relative to certain
changes in our Book of Church Order,
touching the examination of candidates
for the ministry, was sent up- to the
Assembly asking that it be sent down
to the Presbyteries for their advice and
consent.
Fort "Mill was chosen as the place for
the next regular meeting of the Presbytery.
The members of the Presbytery were
most hospitably entertained by the
good people of Daneaster.
Presbytery adjourned to meet at
Pleasant Grove church, June 9th, to

The Home Mission report showed
Presbytery has four Home Mission fie'ds
occupied, for which there was expended
$1,306.45, while $400 was giveVi to
Maypearl to help in the building, $125
was contributed to the Mexican work,
and $250 to the work of the General
Assembly. It is hoped that the churches
will furnish the means to supply two
more Home Mission fields and support
an evangelist, who is sorelv needpd.
One dollpr per member for Home Missions
is the aim of the Preshyterv. The
popular meeting was in the interest of
this cause and the addresses were
