Honesty, like many other virtues, is
bard to define. But, without a
definition, we know what it is. It is integrity
as applied to other people's
property.
There are more kinds of property than
mere money or lands. Time, talent.
reputation, are possessions, and true
honesty respects them no less than
more material things.
"Provide things honest in the sight
of all men," is the Bible injunction.
Let there not be any in all the circle of
those who are in contact with you who
will ever be able to say you defrauded
or despoiled them.
And if we must be honest w.th all
men, how much more so with God! We
owe him certain duties not less than
we owe our fellow men. In failing to
meet those duties we rob him In as
real a sense.
When the word "honesty" is given
as a topic, doubtless the very first
thought that flashes into every mind 18,
"Honesty is the best policy." The
proverb is true, even if it does not contain
all tbe truth. In the end honesty
always gives better returns than dls- (
honesty.
This is far from saying that honesty
should be pursued because it Is the best
policy. The man that is honest only
because there is profit In It lacks the
fundamental pl-lnclple of honesty, that
It is to be pursued even if it does not
pay. We must be honest when It is
against one's Interest
Honesty expresses itself In more ways
than in not taking away others' possessions.
It is just as much a violation of
honesty to keep back, to withhold, what
belongs to another, as to put one hand
In his pocket and steal what belongs to
blm or to carry off his goods In the
nitfbt.
To damage a man's name, in an attempt
to secure our own ends, or even
In careless talk, is as bad as stealing.
Reputation is a part of most men's
stock in trade. If we take it away, or
hurt It, we take hla good even If we do

The Prayer Meeting

"Christ executoth the office of a king
in calling out of the world a people
to himself; and giving them officers,
laws, and censures, by which he visibly
governs; in bestowing saving grace upon
his elect, rewarding their obedience,
and correcting them for their sins, preserving
and supporting >them under all
their temptations and sufferings, restraining
and overcoming all their
enemies and powerfully ordering all
things for his own glory and their good;
and also in taking vengeance on the
rest who know not God and obey not
the Gospel." Such is the definition
given in our Larger Catechism of our
Lord's kingly office.
This truth is at the base of our
spiritual hopes. He has led captivity
captive. He is therefore supreme. He

Church which is his body, the fulness of
him that filleth all in all." He is now
reigning and will continue until "he
shall have put down all rule and authority
and power, for he must reign
until be hath put all enemies under his
feet." Then cometh the end when he
shall have delivered up the kingdom to
God, even the Father."
It was because our Lord became
obedient unto death even the death of
the croBs that God the Father "highly
exalted him and gave unto him the
name which is above every name." In
an Italian cathedral is a painting of
"Chnst enthroned." With his left hand
he steadies a globe, indicating his power
over the world. His right hand is
raised to a position indicating authority.
But in that hand raised in
token of Divine supremacy is the print
of the nail. The lesson is that through
his humiliation and death he is enthroned
as head of his redeemed kingdom.
He is the sovereign God from
eternity, but through the cross he sustains
a special relation to his Church
and indeed to his created universe. "He
is the head of the body, the Church;

A remarkable statement was made
by our Ix>rd to his disciples In Which
