(Jive Yourself a Chuuce with the Sun:
A.n eminent authority has said: "A room
that does not get some sunshine is not
fit to live in," and this is precisely true.
If you have such rooms in your house.
use them for some other purpose than
that of living in them. The only living
things that do not thrive on ?unshinev
are germs and thieves, and germs are
the worst sort oif thieves. Sunshine will
kill them.
When you build, Bee to it that all the
rooms in whii'ch you or yours are to live
will be able to get some sunBhine. It
will be money in your pocket, besides
comfort and health in your family.
In nearly all houses in the country
and -in the villages, towns and smaller
cities where families live, it would
be an easy thing to put in more windows
and improve the ventilation generally.
The exercise of a little ingenuity
On wrvn- *
>?? ;v-ui jjiiii, or tne advice of an expert
would often show how this could
be done in different cases.
But, you say, St would be too expensive.
(No, friend, it would be the
best sort of economy. The money for
medicines and doctor bills that would
be saved would be ample to give you
all the ventilation and sunshine necessary
to good health. Besides, you
.would have the health, which is worth
more than all your other earnings, and
you would avoid the pain, distress and
loss that illness brings.
In your kitchen, if you see clinging
to the celling, spots, here and there,
of shaggy soot, know that this is grease
evaporated on the stove, or range, and
condensed on the wall. This contains
organic matter, some of it harmless,
some of it dangerous bacteria. Day by
day this collects and increases. It
gathers about crackB, other openings
and flues; it permeates in lesser degree
the house, parlor, bedrooms and
all, and makes for the housewife an
everlasting fight. iFrom all this comes
odor. Have you not often sensed it?
And have you not observed <it more in
darkened houses where the sun never
comes? And have you not been aff

house? Is it not dampening to you?
To the degree that this condition exisrtg,
the house is unhealthy for soul
and body.
To drive away the odors, wash the
walls and air and sun the rooms. If
you cannot give them sunshine, give
them more freqent washings and more
fresh airings; and when you build a
house, se? to it that it is constructed
to gather all of God's bright sunshine
that it should reasonably have, and
that is a great deal.
But how can it be secured? we are
asked. One who is informed and has
made a study of it?a high authority?
says on this subject: "Place the house,
first, so that the trees will not keep
sunlight out of the rooms; so that
neighboring houses will not darken the
rooms; and by facing it in a direction
that will expose every room to some sunlight.
Houses set so as to face squarely
east or west or north or south, are
pretty apt to have some sunless rooms.
As a general proposition, houses facing
west or east or north are to be preferred.
80 fronted, an architect can
find a way to get sunshine into every
room.

"It tbere muBt be (lark rooms, the
walls should toe washable and they
must be aired enough to compensate.
See to it that the kitchen and bedrooms
are not of them?the kitchen, because
its walls gather dirt; the bedrooms,
because the bed clothes need sunlight."
The sun is a deadly, unrelenting and
ever active enemy of germs. So let
in the sunshine.

HOUSE CLEANING.
We are all busy house cleaning. From
cellar to garret we are going with brush
and broom. Carpets are being taken up
and cleaned, old furniture is being repaired
and made to look like new,
clothes closets are aired and the rag
man is getting what we have been saving
for years to make room for newer
stuff, which will ,be turned over to him
at some future spring. Here and there
an old piece of furniture must be sold,
or given away, or burned, and a newpiece,
a little costlier and a little more
in style, put in its place. The carpet
must be turned so that the worn places
will come under the sofa or sideboard
and the part faded 'bv !???

sun was out of sight and a brighter
part 'be in the bay window. The curtains
will have to be "done up" and
some of them replaced by new, the piano
must be turned and the pictures rehung.
The winter garments?well filled
with mothballs?are to be laid away.
Prom parlor to kitchen and pantry,
from garret to cellar and store room,
there will be scrubbing and dusting,
painting and varnishing, airing and
renovating. i
It is hard work, it is expensive; but
it is worth all it costs in work ami
money. House cleaning is a sign ot
cultivation, refinement and culture.
Savages do not clean house; they have
no carpets to beat, no pictures 10 hang,
no pianoB to tune. A nation that cleans
house is a civilized nation; the few
