(By order of Presbytery in session a
We, as a Presbytery, and members
of the Sabbath Committee, seek nothing
for ourselves as Individuals in this pastoral

for a moment shut out the world and,
alone with God, consider this unselfish
appeal?
These are days of broad views and
liberal ideas but they can never erase
the jots and tittles of God's law: "1 am
God, I change not." "Heaven and earth
shall pass away but my words shall
not pass away," are the unchangeable
statements of an omniscient God, and
on him neither centuries, time nor customs
of time have sprung any surpr.ses.
Nothing has occurred outside himself
among men, angels, or the alTaira of
either, to show the unwiseness of any
of his laws or necessity for a change.

Book, and echoes back from the coming
Judgment, while, in mercy, God waits
for obedience from his intelligent creatures.
The Presbytery called on the committee
for a supplementary report on
"What constitutes proper Sabbath observance."
Here we embody the sa>me
as directed by Presbytery:
First/It is such conduct of the body,
mind and spirit of man, before and
durmg the whole Sabbath day, as will
keep It holy. There is to he mental
effort, prior to and during this day, to
sanctify (set apart) the same for rest,
for meditation upon the soul's eternal
interests, and for works of necessity
rnd mercy. 'Works at necessity' are
understood as referring to such calls
of nature as would result in suffering
if not attended to, and not to mere convenience.
The carnal pleasures of self
or friends are not to 'be considered as
calls of nature. The above refers especially
to the Inner acts and attitudes
of the individual's mind and reBts
largely upon the first word of our
Tx)rd's command, 'Remember the Sabbath
day to keep it holy.'
Second, Jt is to be understood that
the bringing of body or mind Into re'-.Monshtp

buggy-riding, or social contact in
the home, parlors, parks, games, places
of amusement, conveyances, literature,
scenes or sounds, that would prevent
the body of self or others from rest or
prevent the mind of self or others from
dwelling on spiritual things, is a failure
to keep the Sabbath day holy.
Third, Trayer, reading the word of
God and religious literature, attending
the house of worship when at all physically
able, constitute a proper and a
positive part of the observance of a

turn away thy foot from tne Sabbath,
from doing thy pleasure on my holy
day; and call the Sabbath a delight,

ways, nor finding thine own pleasure,
nor speaking thine own words. Then
?halt thou delight thyself in the Lord;
and I will cause thee to ride upon the
high places of the earth, and feed thee
with the heritage of Jacob "thy father;
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken

Sabbath Observance

.t Mt. Pleasant, April 9, 1912.)
Is there a need for a Pastoral Letter
on Sabbath Observance? Is there Sabbath
desecration? You need not ask
this committee nor the Columbia PreBbytery.
You need'nt ask the permanent
and Btated committees of our highest
Chinch court. Don't ask that pick of
Intelligence and piety from our South
land (the General Assembly). Neither
is it worth while to ask that "Veteran

stand by the rushing railway train and
the rolling press and then consult the

Go witness the open panor an?? orowded

Look on the pleasure devotee, and then
ask the man or woman nearest the Bible
and nearest God. Open your eyes and
get a vision, and then ask your conscience.
Last of all, go look upon the
pernicious stuff read by our young people
and tolerated by parents, which is
sapping the last vestige of their piety,
and then go ask the old Book with history
that thrills, stories that charm,
