THE PRESBYTERtA
| Scholarship Awards
President Finley, of the Southern
Railway Company, announced today
that all arrangements had been com- 1
pleted for the award of Southern Rail- '
way scholarships in agriculture iu the
State Agricultural College of each State *
traversed by the lines of the Southern
Railway Company and the companies 1
naouv.iaieu wivii 11 in iarni improvement
work, so that the scholarships may be
awarded prior to the beginning of the 1
school year this fall. The purpose of
the management of the company to c
award these scholarships as a means of t<
supplementing the extensive work ]
which the company is doing for the im- f
provement of agriculture in the terri- ?
tory traversed by its lines south of the
Potomac and Ohio Rivers and east of
the Mississippi was announced last
February. The selection of the young .
men who will receive the scholarships
has been plated entirely iu the hands of
the President of the State Agricultural
College in each State and all corre
spoudence relative to the matter should
be addressed to him.
The general plan in accordance with
which the scholarships will be awarded
is as follows:
First. The scholarship shall be I
awarded to a boy, preferably from the I
farm, living in a county, within the i
State, traversed by a line of one of the
1 ail way companies participating m the
award.
Second. The boy must meet the entrance
requirements of the college.
Third. The boy must be financially
unable to avail himself of an agricult- >.
urai coiiege education witnout assistance.
Provided, that the president of a
college,, if he deems it advisable, may
divide the total amount awarded to
such college among two or more boys
who may be able to defray part of their
expenses from other sources.
Fourth. Subject to the above conditions,
the president of each college for
which scholarships are to be awarded
may determine for himself the method
of selecting the boys to whom they shall
be awarded. The management of the
railway companies, believing that the
best results will be obtained if the selection
of the boys shall be left entirely
lo the college authorities, will not participate
in such selection in any way or
recommend the award of a scholarship
to any particular boy.
Fifth. Each boy to whom a scholarship
may be awarded must maintain a
good standing in his classes throughout
7s entire college course and must conform
to the rules and regulations of the
ollege. The authorities of the college
all have full and llnal authority to deermine
tthe degree of delinquency or
of insubordination that shall constitute
grounds for the withdrawal o?f the benefits
of a scholarship from any student.
In no case shall a beneficiary of a
scholarship be permitted to appeal from
any act or decision of the college authorities
to the railway companies.
Sixth. In colleges in which it Is cusomary
to send to the parents or guardians
of students periodical reports- as
o their standing and conduct, such report
as to the beneficiaries of railway
scholarships shall be forwarded to the
President of the Southern Railway Company.
as well as to the parent or
guardian.
