"What happened to Babylon?" asked
She Sabbath school teacher.
"It fell." cried the pupil.
"And what 'became of Nineveh?"
"It was destroyed."
"And what of Tyre?"
"Punctured!"
LONGEVITY PERSONIFIED.
Senator Benjamin F. Tillman relates.
an amusing anecdote about a colored
man named Jeff, who has been with
a . neighboring South Carolina family
since long before the war.
"One day," said Mr. Tillman, "his
mistress was rather surprised when old
Jeff asked to have a few days off to go,
aB he put It, to de ole state of Bostftig,'
to see his aunt.
" 'Why, Jeff,' said the lady, 'your aunt
must me pretty old, isn't she?'
"4Yes'm,, he replied, 'yee'm; mah aunt
must he pretty ole now? She's 'bout ah
hundred an' five years ole now.'
- " 'One hundred and five years!" exclaimed
his mistress; 'why what on
earth is she doing up there ah Boston?"
" 'Deed, I's dunno what she's doin',
ma'am,' rejoined old Jeff, in all seriousness;
'she's up dere livin' wid her gran'mOther.'
"?'Philadelphia Record.
"Susannah," asked the preacher,
when it came her turn to answer the
usual question tin such cases, "do you
take this man to be ycur wedded husband.
for better or for worse"?
"Jes' as he is, pahson," she interrupted,
"jes' as he is. Ef he gets any
better Ah'll know de good Lawd's
gwine take him an' if he gets any wusser,
w'y, Ahll ten to him myself."
JOHN'S SISTERS.
"I say, there," he asked, as he stood
in the streets of Paris for the first lute,
und watched two Sisters of Mercy pass
along, "what kind of wimmen is them
I seen go along, ail Ln black, with a
white thing round their face and neck?"
"Oh/' replied the man addressed,
"they're the Sisters of St. John the Bap- tWt."
"Get out!" was the sneering answer,
"you can't fool me. Why, man, John
the Baptist has been dead more'n a
hundred years."?Tit-Bits.
HIS RESPONSIBILITY.
Wendell Phillips, the abolitionist,
went to Charlosion and put up at a
hotel. He bad breakfast served in his
room and was waited upon by a slave.
Mr. Phillips seized the opportunity to
represent to the negro in a pathetic
way that He regarded him as a man and
brother. The negro, however, seemed
more anxious about his breakfast than
he was about his position in the social
scale. Phillips became discouraged and
'told him to go away, saying that, he
could not bear to be waited on by a
sl'ave. "You must 'souse me, masse,"
said the nergro; "I is "bilged to stay
here 'cause il'm 'sponsible for the silverware."
His Guess.
The teacher was telling the story of
Red Riding Hood. She had described
the woods and the wild animals that
live there. v
"Suddenly," she said, "Red Riding
Hood heard a loud noise. She turned
around, and what do you suppose Bhe
saw standing there, looking at her and
showing all its sharp, white teeth?"
"Teddy Roosevelt!" cried one of the
boys.?Judge.
