Some while ago, when our country
was being flooded with Mormon, Adventist

truth which was being assailed, and
have sow reached about all wiho can

at a cost of nearly ten thousand dollars,

How shall we reach the many thousands

SOUTH AMERICAN PROCESSIONS
NOT WHAT ONE THINKS, BUT
WHAT ONE SEES!
Now for what was seen on the streets
of Punta Arenas, one year ago last
summer. It Is not the purpose to state
here all that was seen in this processon,
but some of the prominent features.
The general make-up of the procession
can be Imagined from what has been
said above as to garbs. One striking
scene, but neverthless very repulsive to
the writer, was a cart In which was the

oart a lot of mock-mourners, weeping
bltterely over the death of their relative,
and a mock priest sprinkling so-called
holy water on the people. An Injection
of personal feeling will he pardoned
here, I think, and consequently the
writer, who Is no Catholic, will say that
the exhibit was a very disgusting performance
to him! Feeling as he does
that the devout Catholic has a perfect
right to his forms of worship, It was a
piece of disgusting speotacularism to be
resented.
Another cart had the semblance of a
corpse, a presentation of a deceased
person, but who In this Instance represented
the devil. As In the former case,
mourners surrounded the cart, and all
Imaginable mock musical instruments

every musical principle. This was something
laughable, shockingly laughable,
and the finale of the affair more s>?,
for as a finality this cart drew up be
tween two telephone poles, and the presentation
of the devil -was swung up by
the neck between the poles with the following

Interested. Punta Arenas has five
companies of firemen, and each has a
different uniform as far as color is concerned.
When on parade, a spectacular
procession Is seen, which is not only a
thing of beauty but interesting in its
primary idea.
Religious spectacularism is a characteristic
feature of the work of the
Catholic Cburoh In South America, and
in Punta Arenas it is seen in full fruition.
All Saints' Day, the day of prayer
for the departed, is one of the processional
days. On this day a procession is
formed at the church, composed of bish
ops, priests, monks, nuns, and the
schools In the control of the church,
and the procession marches to the cemetery,
ahout one mile from the starting
point. In the cemetery religious services
are held, and all over the cemetery
one sees little groups around the graves,
with priests saying prayers for the departed,
and sprinkling holy water on
the corners of the enclosures.
The fiesta of the Virgin Mary carries
with- it the spectacular procession of
the year. After services In the chapel,
the procession forms at the door, and
is composed of all the dignitaries of the
church, assisted by priestB, monks,
teachers, and scholars of the Catholic
schools, and banners Interspersed all
along the long line; but the greatest
scene is that of the Virgn Mary and the
Child. This Is supported on a platform,
carried on the shoulders of devout
Catholic men, and Is literally covered
with flowers. Just In front Is a lot
of little girls with baskets of flowers,
who scatter the flowers on the platform,
and a band of music plays appropriately.
trie priests and monks chanting prayers,
and all followed by a large crowd of
devout Catholic people, many of them
counting their beads and uttering prayers.
They march around the plasa and
go back Into the church. The whole
thing is very spectacular and Interesting.
The writer makes no comments in
the line of criticism, and his province Is
to report not what he thinks, but what
he sees.?J. W. Rowen, Former Consul

THORNWELL ORPHANAGE.
The month of August has been a busy
one with us at the Thornwell Orphanage.
At no time did the number of children
get below 150, although many were
nrivnegea to lane mue vacation trip?.
All have now returned and are ready
for school, which begins on the second
day of September,
Several improvements were made
during the month. At Riverside cottage,?"The
Orphans' Montreal,"?two
airy and comfortable rooms were built
in the attic, and a delightful dining
room with a capacity for forty "guests"
was added. The cottage was repainted.
The hall that was formerly used
as a dining room is bow a reception
room. Over a hundred children were
given two weeks each at this deliifht
nil little "summer resort." Miss Ktty
Morris, one of our matrons, was hostess.
At; home the girls and boys were
busy. Beside their usual duties necessary
Tot home comfort, they canned
many buehels of tomatoes, beans, okra,
corn and peaches which will be of very
great service next winter. A steam
cooking outfit was set up In the kitchen.
The printing department of th"tech"
was improved by the setting un
of a folding machine. Hose and reel
have been bought and with the opening
; (1049) 19
of the school the larger boys will be
formed into a fire company and will be
prepared to do their part In protecting
the property from fire.
The foundation of the Florida oottage
has been laid; work 1s progressing and
on the 2nd day of September the cornerstone
will be laid with befitting ceremonies.
On the same day the school win m.
open and three hundred orphans will be
at work once more. The fiscal year of
the Institution terminates with the 1st
of September. At this writing It looks
as If there would be a small deficiency,
though we hope not. and indeed there
will not be If the friends of the fatherlees
decide that it shall not be. The
treasurer's report will show that there
has been an increase in contributions
over the year previous, but owing to the
Increased cost of living, the expenses
have been heavier. The family also has
been a little larger than for the previous
year.
The care of three hundred children,
many of them with an Inheritance of
disease and with weakened constitutions,
Is a very grave responsibility and
exceedingly trying. We have had our
share of such trials, but God has blessed
the Home with brighter prospects
than for years past. Perhaps, at this
present time, the burden of distress Is
the fact that here are at least a hundred
and fifty applicants for admission that

Friends must be patient with
the management. They are doing the
best possible under the circumstances.
As soon as the Florida cottage is
completed, which will be as soon as a
thousand dollars additional is received,
we will be able to admit twenty more
children.
