This department grew out of the
work undertaken by the Southern and
allied lines two years ago in the territory

Alabama and Mississippi. It was found
that; In aiding the farmers to fight the
weevil, greatly increased yields per
acre were secured and so successful
wub the result considered that President
Flnley decided to extend the work
to the entire territory covered by the
Southern Railway, and Georgia Soutuern
and Florida Railway, the .Mobile
and Ohio Railroad, the Alabama Great
Soutnern Railroad, the Cincinnati, 'New
Orleans and Texas Pacillc Railway and
the smaller hues which make up the
Southern 'System. The field agents of
this department will work personally
with the farmers to whom their services
are without cost of any kind, in
carrying on this work, the Southern's
department will co-operate closely with
the United States Department of Agriculture,
the various State agricultural
departments and agricultural colleges.
The work of the department is under
the direction of Mr. T. O. Plunkett,
manager, who will have headquarters
in Atlanta, and report to President Finley
through Mr. J. C. Williams, assistant
to the president at Washington.
Mr. Plunkett will be aided by three
assistant managers?Mr. W. D. Clayton,
with headquarters at Chattanooga; Mr.
A. E. Grabel, with headquarters at Charlotte,
and Mr. Roland Turnef, with
headquarters at Meridian, Miss. Field
agents will be located at the following
points: Manassas, Va., Danville, Va.,
Greensboro, N. C., Greenville, S. C.,
Asheville, N. C., Columbia, S. C., Atlanta,
Ga., Macon, Ga., Valdosta, Ga.,
Knoxville, Tenn., Helenwood, Tenn.,
Jackson, Tenn., Danville, Ky., Tuscumbia,
Ala., Thomasville, Ala., Marion
Junction, Ala., Maplesville, Ala., Tuscaloosa,
Ala., Anniston, Ala., Attalia,

At a public reception a newly appointed
pastor in one of the New York
churches, one of the speakers of the
occasion, addressing the pastor, said,
among other things: "If it is your business
to be in the pulpit of this church
from Sunday to Sunday to preach, it
is mine to be in the pew to hear. If
you, as the shepherd, are to lead and
feed this flock, it is my duty to be with
the flock, so that I can be led and fed.
You have precisely the same right to
leave your pulpit vacant and preaoh in
other pulpits that I have to leave my
pew empty in my own church and fill
a seat in some other church." it may

from the pulpit as have any of his
members to absent themselves from the
stated services of the sanctuary, without
legitimate excuse. Yet it must be cornceded
that on general principles the
position taken is correct. The cause
suffers not a little from the short-comings
of the church in this respect. Too
many people seem to think that the
principal thing about religion, and the
hope of heaven is to have the name on
the church roll. They seem to forget
