vileness, (unthinkable ingratitude, incredible
revolt against the love and
grace of our Father and Saviour. We
have all of us committed such sins, constantly,
freely, in deliberate and awTul
disobedience to the light that is so fully
ours. There may come a time when our
tallure in sin is so complete and soulwrecking,
while our consciousness of
what Christ has been to us, and what
we now by our sin have repudiated, is
so keen and bitterly condemning, that
we think it is now all over with us. Our
Christian life is at an end, we cry. It
once was sweet, full, rich, glorious; we
have flung it from us trampled It under

hideous hoplessness of our failure. So
sweeps over us the temptation of hell to
hnal unbelief. As we turn even now in
prayer again to God our only cry is.
"Kor this canst thou forgive me, O God
is thy love, thy patience, thy forgiveness,
equal to this?" With 'blessed conviction
comes the answer, "It is equal
to anything that thou canst bring me, if
only thou wilt bring it to me." And then
we break down under the pressure of
that marvelous love; for our stony heart

God to forgive is the sin of refusing to
bring our sins to him.?S. S. Times.
ITALY ASD THE MOHAMMEDAJi.
Well informed authorities estimate
the Mohammedan population of the
world at 260,000,000, or from 20,000,00e
to 40,000,000 more than the nutnfber 01
Protestant Christians in all the world.
Yet today there is not in all the Mohammedan
world a single school of
university grade, established, supported,
and taught by Moslems, while ever>
great world power is Christian and
Protestant as well.
aicnougn not Protestant in name, Italy
is founded upon Protestant principles,
as any reader of Garlanda's recent
"New lltaly" may assure himself.
And while we see no legal justification
of the attack which Italy has made upon
Tripoli, the contest that is now joineu
.is the old one of Cross and Crescent renewed.
In other words, it is a fight to
establish courts where there has been
despotism; order where there has been
violence; and freedom of religion where
there has been death for all not
Moslem.
What Italy may make of the races
found in North Africa remains to be
seen; but the absolute incompetence of
Mohammedanism to make anything of
them has been shown by experiment extending
over thirteen centuries. Tripoli
is as far removed from civilization today
as she was when the followers of Mohammed
first swept through these coasts
on their way to Spain in 647 A. D.
The Turk never occupied Tripoli; he
only lived in the castle. The Turk never
promoted the industries of the natives,
but simply collected "all the traffic
would bear," and sent the loot to Constantinople.
Under polygamy, Illiteracy,
superstition, and violence, the land
has always groaned. And it is a land
as large as California and Oregon combined.
and as capable of cultivation. We
all understand that Italy's first purpose
is to furnish her restless population
with a new home under her own flag.
We shall doubtless see something of f
reduction of the numbers seeking our
shores from Genoa and Naples. But
Italians who have once breathed the
free air of America will not easily be
diverted to North Africa. The cross is
something more with us than a flag. ?

Christ. It was not until he looked away
fro.ll Jesus, and thouerht. more of the
dangers around him that he began to
sink. As Christ's eye is on us, for he
"will guide us with his eye," our eyes
should be upon him, in trust, in obedience,
in desire for conformity to his
image, in effort to be like him. As long
as we thus look upon him, we are able
to walk safely even upon the treacherous
waters of life, and our feet will
not sink. "Look unto me and be ye
saved, all the ends of the earth. For I
am God, and besides me there is none
other."
THE OLD TRUTHS.
Some religionists are saying that the
old views of the .Bible are altogether
out of date, and therefore are not adapted
to the needB of the "modern man."
God's plan of salvation is forever unchangeable.
Its terms have not been
subject to revision. (Human sin is the
same today as it ever was. Human
depravity has had no alteration since
the fall of the first man and woman.
It is permanently inherent in the constituton
of every .person and every
child. It will never become true in
this world that one in his natural state
needB no change of heart, no change
of nature. The old truths of the old
Bible declared that a pinftii
needs to be superseded by a new and
pure nature. They declare that the
atonement of Christ is a necessary
basis for the forgiveness of one's sins,
and for the impartation of the divine
life, by which one becomes a new creation
and a new personality. The sinner
will ever need a divine Saviour.
Nothing can change this truth. There
can be no true substitute for a personal
faith in Christ, and in him crucified.
Nor Is there any warranted substitute
for the preaching of the old truths of
Christ's cross, and the vital doctrines
which are related) to it.?Ex.

Who are our best friends? This question
came to mind in studying the life
of Ahab and Jezebel. Probably be regarded

um was sue ms oest rrienci? His best,
his truest friend was the prophet who
told him the truth and sought to turn
him from the ways of falsehood Into
the ways of truth. 4
But it ds often the case that we do
not recognize our real friends. We esteem
those who flatter us and thus
make us wise In our own conceit, or
those who seek to please us and thus
help us possibly to go more rapidly in
the ways of evil, rather than those whose
counsel and influence help us to live
better lives. A man's dearest friend is
sometimes his worst enemy. No one
is a good friend to another if his friendship
in any way tends to lead him into
evil. He may be a friend of some kind,
but, no good friend.
