Text, Titus, 2:1.
Having been requested to preach on Christian
Science, I am doing go without any unkind feeling
to those who believe in it. 1 have no doubt
that many good people in their weakness through
sickness have caught at Christian Science as a
drowning man catching at a straw.
Some of my friends who believe in Christian
Science have kindly furnished me with their
own literature, so that the knowledge 1 get of
this teaching comes direct from Mrs. Eddy's
writing, or those of her followers. Much that
this lady has written is true, but was known to

teachers of mental science have long known that
the mind has much to do with the condition of
the body. Why should Mrs. Eddy tell us this
and why should she state so many Scripture
truths, and thus make two large books, and
many smaller ones, when she might have in a
Jew pages stated the peculiarities of her belief ?
Uor system as a whole, when stripped of the
truths that have long been known, is so absurd
that it raises the question as to the soundness
of her mind.
Briefly L will quote from Mrs. Eddy, or from
her followers, and make a few comments of my
own.
It is said that, "It" produces a happy and
contented mentality." L may suggest that the
opium smoker feels contented and happy under
the effects of that drug. So this erroneous teaching
may lull the soul to sleep with a false security,
crying peace, peace, when there has been
no real peace Deivveen tne sinner and Ins tiod.
It is said to reform men, drunkards and profane
persons, that they cease to worry about
business, that they are loving and kind to their
brethren and fellowmen. But did not the Bible
teach all this before Mrs. Eddy taught it ? Why
buy Mrs. Eddy's expensive books when a cheap
Bible would teach these things far better than
.Mrs. Eddy!
She says Jesus did not use dings to heal the
sack. Of course lie did not, because he healed
by his divine, miraculous nower. nnd ATrs TMdv
speaks of miracles as impossible, and does not
admit that Jesus was divine, while she speaks
of him as the Son of God, yet in such a way as
to rob hini of his divinity.
" Christian Science teaches that God is principle.
and not person." Then her God is not
the same intelligent, all wise, sovereign, personal
being that the Christian worships, but is some
sort of something that she calls "Principle."
She sneaks of t.h?? " TncrrvJi"^ im?j ~t 41? c< ?
, ^UU|/iivu nuiu UJ nil' OUX"J'l?txires."
and yet claims that men have "projected
or inserted some erroneous statements and
conclusions on the pages of the Book." She
-speaks of the second chapter of Genesis, telling
of the forming of man of the dust as "a lie,"
as "legendary." as "a picture of* error," as

''falsity, error.'' She rejects the statement ot"
I he temptation of Eve as a "myth."
She teaches that "Sin, sickness and death are
unreal."
Where Christ, said he would give another
Comforter," she says, "This Comforter I understand
to be Divine Science." Thus she denies
the personality and divinity of the Holy
Spirit.
She give* her version of the Lord's Frayer
so as to read, "Our Father-Mother God, etc."
-\nd instead of the Saviour's words. "Forsrive
us our debts." etc., she substitutes, "Love is
reflected in love." Thus she does not confess
ilmt we are sinners and need "our debts" forgiven.
J will not further quote from her Confession
of Faith, except to give the contradiction between
her statement of her faith and the statements
of the lfible, as shown by an eminent
Baptist minister, Kev. A. C. Dixon"It
is a religion of contradictions. It contradicts
the experience of all normal, healthy minds
by asserting that matter, sin, disease and death
nave no existence. it contradicts the world ol
science by denying every fact and principle by
which science has advanced. It contradicts the
Uihle in numerous instances.
For instance:

What right has Mrs. Eddy to claim the. name
Christian when she rejects the fundamental doctrines
of Christianity*?denying the personality
of God, rejecting the Bible as inspired, except,
those portions that she approves of, not recognizing
the divinity of Christ and his miraculous

power, ignoring the personality and divinity of
the Holy ISpirit, claiming sin to be unreal, disowning
the atonement of Christ as made by his
sufferings and death on the cross, passing by
the necessity ol repentance and a true, saving
faitli in Christ. How can a faith that omits all
this be considered as Christian?
It is not scientific. Her religion proposes to
iieal the sick, but not by scientific methods.
i iivriiciuufe mr seicminc. mey dissect and analyze
the body, examine its parts under the mi
croseope. Thus they know the needs of the
body. They examine by chemical science the
substances God has given in the minerals of the
earth, as calomel, and the substances he has given
in the plants and trees, as quinine. They have
experimented and found these and other sub
stances that God lias provided in the natural
world to be adapted to heal disease. There is
something scientific in that way of dealing with
disease. The Christian while using the medicine
and medical skill that God has provided, is encouraged
to pray by the assurance that the Bible
gives that the prayer of faith shall save the
sick, modified of course by the teaching of the
Bible that we should be submissive to God's
will, if in his infinite wisdom he should not con
' hum* u nest rnai in all instances the sick should
he healed. But Mrs. Eddy denies the reality
of sickness, and only by some sort of mental
exercise would have the siek convinced that he
is not sick.
Christian Science claims a large number of
Mck persons as healed. As some modern evangelists
claim large numbers of converts when

Science. In ( rockett a Christian lady was treatid
by a Christian Scientist, and required to pay *'
l.er fees promptly. The patient did not get
better, but died, and the scientist apologized for
die failure by asserting that there must have
been some unbeliever in the house who caused
the failure.
Christian Scientists tell how many cures they
nave maae, out :an to tell how many of their
-patients have died. And they fail to report the
large number that have died of neglect, because
Ihey refuse to send for a physician and use medie?ne.
T have it on good authority that a lady
who once lived in Crockett, and afterwards lived
in Austin, saw one of her neighbors to be .very
sick. She told the husband or brother of the
siek lady that he ousht to send at once for n
doctor. He refused to do so. The laidv took
the responsibility of calling in a physician for
the sick person. The doctor found it to be a
case of appendicitis that required immediate attention.
The patient was taken to a hospial, an
operation was performed, and the life was saved
?hut not by Christian Science. That so-called
science would have caused the death of that
