Crockett 1 do not know a dozen persons who
claim to have been cured by Christian Science.
But i know of hundreds who have been relieved
many times of great sufferings, and have been
restored to health, or have had their lives prolonged
through the instrumentality of faithful
physicians, and the blessing of God in answer
to prayer. There may be in Houston a fow who
claim to have been cured by Christian Science.
But there are thousands who know they have

instrumentality pi good physicians and medicine.
As to the number of cures there is no i
comparison between Christianity and Christian
Science, to say nothing of the countless multitudes
healed before the world heard of Christian
Science. 1
Tins so-called science gives a wonderful emphasis
to healing sickness, but says little about
the salvation of the soul from a real and dreadful
hell. It is scarcely concerned about the
question, "What shall it profit a man if he shall
gain the whole world and lose his own soul.?"
"What would it profit a person to be healed many
times, and at last lose his soul?
We need to study our liibles more carefully,
and thoroughly, and prayerfully, in our home
life, in our JSabbath schools, and with the help I
of the gospel preaching in our Christian pulpits. '

the solemn warning God gives in the Jast words
of the Bible against adding to or taking from 1
his word, and bear in mind the awful curse J
threatened against those preaching'' another gos- <

When one of the worst English kings was 3
trying to force back England into a popery 1
which, happily, it then abhorred, he ordered
all the clergy to read an illegal declaration of
indulgence. Every coward, every time-server,
every lacing-Dotn- ways, was trembling in his
shoes, and it seemed probable that they would
bow to the tyrant's will. Then arose Dr. Fowler,
rector of St. Giles's, and said: "I must be 1
plain. The question is so simple that argument
can throw no light upon it, and can only generate
heat. Let every man say yes or no, but I
cannot consent to abide by the vote of the majority.
This declaration I cannot in conscience
read." The (bold avjord strutek courage into
nerveless and flaccid hearts. The London clergy
refused to obey the order. Samuel "Wesley, 1
father of John and Charles Wesley, then a 1
London curate, refused to Kinor .Tnmoa'a <

When traveling 111 Germany a year and a half
ago, 1 attended at Dresden the great international
Scientific Hygiene exhibition, represented
by nearly ail the civilized nations of the world.
1 was surprised to see in beer-drinking Germany
so niucn scientific attention given to aicoiiol.
DKKtiDEN S CONtiKLSS EXHIBIT,
in a large park there were 08 large buildings
devoted to the puDlic health work of nearly all
nations, including even Japan and China, except,

told by intelligent scholars of alcoholics that
many new statistics and facts had been there
brought out by expert physiologists against the
use of alcoholic beverages.
KING WILLIAM A TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE.
Science is comiug rapidly to aid of total abstinence
in this ti;-:ht for health, long life, and
prosperity, not only in Germany but all through
the world. Kaiser VYillhelm himself is trying to
slop alcoholic drinking, lie has given it up in
his home, besides sending his sons to the University,

fashion. He desires his army to become an army
of abstainers in order to make better soldiers.
DRESDEN INTERNATIONAL HYGIENIC CONGRESS.
This great Hygienic Congress at Dresden gave
wonderful education to visitors. It told all
about bacilli, microbes, corpuscles, etc. It cost
over a million of dollars, and was visited by
millions ot' people from every part of the world.
DEATH RATE OF EUROPEAN NATIONS.
Heretofore Germany has had a high death
rate, from almost universal beer drinking. Bulgaria,
with less than eight million people, but a
sober, buttermilk drinking, mountain race, has
more centenarians than Germany, with 70 million
people?one centenarian to every 100,000
people, while Germany has only one to each 700,)00.
Scientific temperance in Germany has already
caused a decline in its death rate. Sweden's
hygienic statistics at this Congress was very
gratifying. Its people show a long duration of
life: greater nerhans than nnv mho* u/ootoi-n
nation. There has been there, within a half
century, a vast diminution in alcoholic drinking.
SWEDEN NOW PROHIBITION.
Alcoholic customs bring on contagious and infectious
diseases, which Sweden has been combating
with wonderfully successful results.
Not only have the Swedes recently prohibited
the manufacture and sale of liquors, but they
iiave established Swedish school gymnastics and
hygienic Swedish exercises and playgrounds to
jccupy the youth, with games and high ideals
leading them from temptations of idleness and
nee and liquor-drinking.
SCIENTIFIC TEMPERANCE.
Scientific vital statistics are now being studied
'>y our Life Insurance Companies, that show total
abstainers live 25 per cent, longer than mod?rate
drinkers. What is temperance? The old
mswer is, "The moderate use of all that is good,
md total abstinence from all that is bad." Al
^oholic beverages have an age-long reputation
jf being wholly bad. and Science proves it.
SCIENCE MAN'S FRIEND.
Science is knowledge of principles; accumulated
and established knowledge. Scientific Temperance
is the method of careful observation and
ocperiment; also, a generalization of results into
laws and statements.

ne gradually imbibes more and more, of
what he at tirst considered a friend. Hence appetite
grows stronger and stronger; degeneration
begins and goes on, to the inevitable drunkard's
end. The loss of judgment, reason, memory
and will power takes place. Scientific experiments,
in thousands of cases, show alcohol
not only us a narcotic and poison, but a nerve
puralyzer.
^uuc.viiuis jllst teach total abstinence.
What should be the remedies employed to rid
our Nation of this tremendous curse, which, i|
left to the avarice of drink manufacturers and
vendors, might destroy our Republic within less
than a century? .Mrs. Hunt, in her famous lectures
years ago, stated that the "four A's" are
destroying our Nation; viz., Alcohol, Appetite,
Avarice and Apathy. Temperance instruction to
the young, showing the deadly effects of Alcohol
upon the human organism, is imperative. Purity
of thought and habit should be taught the rising
generation, including religious instruction.
When the evil effects of alcoholic liquors are
thoroughly learned, prohibition will then be enacted
and enforced, thus taking away temptation
and the seductive influences of the open
saloon from our boys and adult citizens.
"A bad spell" for bars: The English Cockney
spelled saloon as "First an hess, then a hell,
two hoes and a hen." The saloon certainly leads
to "Hell" thousands who enter it.
DRY STATISTICS.
.Maine and ivansns, for many years, have been
true exponents of the virtue of prohibition to
save a state. Such good results recently are being
shown in many other states of our country.
There are only four states left in the Union in
which there is no '"dry" territory. They are
Pennsylvania, Montana, Nevada, and Arizona.
In eight states the sale of liquor is absolutely
forbidden by law. They are Maine, Kansas,
North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, North Carolina,
Georgia, and Mississippi. To that list
West Virginia will be added in 1914. In the
other states, local or county option prevails, but
in most of them there is far more "dry" than
* wet.7' territory.

HI8T0KY CONDEMNS ALCOHOL.
As we study History, we find that Alcohol
drinking has always proved itself to be the great
destroyer of nations, as well as of individuals.
Its appalling effects in every country on earth
have long been the overwhelming problem of the
ages. Generation after generation have fallen
before King Alcohol and his minions. Our own
great nation can never be immune from its ravages
until it is fully aroused to its inevitable de
structive results. Fortunately, as I have intimated,
the nations of Europe are now awakening
to a strong determination to destroy this
monster.
