once had a rare treat in hearing Kcv.
Dr. Charles Merle D'Aubigno of Paris,
France, who discussed some "Present
Tendencies in the National L.ife of *
France," the present trend b?ing to
wards a healthier religious tone.
Wednesday nioraiug at 11 the final
exercises were held, being opened with
prayer by Uev. Dr. D'Aubigne. The
president then announced the successful
winners of the various scholarships
and prizes, twenty-two in number, after
which Dr. Charles Beatty Alexander
was introduced, and made a thoughtprovoking
address on the Relation of
; Academic Freedom to the Teachiug of
i Moral Science. An interesting thing
| hap-pened later on, when his MS. was .
I sought and obtained by the representa
tive ot a college that has before it
right now the election of a professor ,
, of Moral Science, and is confronted
with the fact that the man they are
. seeking claims "academic freedom"?
. i. c., the right to be a law unto himself
, as to what views he shall inculcate.
J Dr. Alexander's address was followed
by the Valedictory, delivered by Mr.
I l'aul Dulaney Converse, of Morristown,
- Tenn. Then came the delivery of diplo3
mas. There were four Masters of Arts;
forty-nine Bachelors of Arts; three
Civil Engineers; fourteen Bachelors of
Science, and forty-six Bachelors of
law?one hundred and sixteen In all.
President Smith then pronounced the
i| session at an end; and after the benel'
diction, the audience dispersed.

LOOK ALOFT!
When Sir Walter Scott was a child
he suffered from the paralysis of one
leg. A kind uncle determined to rouse
him to the use of that defective limb
by holding before his eyes some pretty
toy and drawirg it away, thus encouraging
the child to crawl after him with
tho hope of securing it. This process,
kept up for many weeks, finally brought
the desired result. In some such fashion

It would seem natural for a creature
made in God's image to look aloft. It
is only the abnormal and morally taint?
ed man who like 'Mammon in Milton's
picture, keeps his eyes fastened upon
5 the earth. God made man upright.
Sin has constrained him to stoop. God
intended him to be an heroic figure,
his head among the stars, his feet
trampling evil in the dust. Sin has
beaten him down and compelled him
