A housewife who was preparing to
put some furs and other winter clothing
away for the summer placed a
s:naii nag or mom balls on tlie table
in the dining room and went into the
kitchen to look after her baking. "When
she returned she saw her young son
making a wry face.
"What's wrong, Robert?" she inquired.
"Nothing much, mamma." replied the
boy, "l do believe those marshmallows
are spoiled."
"Well," said the. Billville neighbor,
"I reckon your John is satisfied, now
that he's safe in Congress."
"No." said the old lady. "Just as
sunn :is. he Iii? climw nut
in a biled shirt an' takes a ride in a
oterinohile he'll wonder why it didn't
occur to him to run for president."
I'nela ltastus lived so far 'hack in
i.lte beautiful wildwood, according to a
story told the other evening by Congressman
Tribble, of (ieorgia, that he
had never ridden in an automobile.
In fact, lie had never seen one until
lie recently visited a town in the populous
section of the State.
While gazing wonderingly at the car
I'ntle 'iastus was invited to motor, and
after considerable hesitancy lie finally
climbed aboard. Down the road th?*
machine speedily whi/.y.ed with the dark
one holding fast with both hands. Safely
over the hills it smoothly flew for
several miles, aiul then things suddenly
happened.
Something got wrong with the steering
gear and the machine headed for
a tree. The grass was soft and nobody
was hurt.
^ "Dat were suah fas' ridin', boss," remarked
i'ncle Kastus as he slowly rose
to his feet. "Hut dere am jes' one fing

"What is it, Uncle Rastus?"
"It am jes* dis, boss, how do yo'
stop him when vo' git to a place whar'
dere ain't no tree?"
"Now, Harold." said the teacher, "if
there were eleven sheep in a field and
six jumped the fence, how many would
there be left?"
"None," replied Harold.
"Why, there would," said she.
"No, ma'am, there wouldnft," persisted
he. "You may know arithmetic,
hut von don't know sheen "
' Well, here I am," announced the
fashionable physician in his breezyway.
"And now what do you think
is the matter with you?"
"Doctor, I hardly know," replied the
fashionable patient. "What is new?"
"The violent argument you use is
no argument," said young Mrs Noah
Heep.
"No," replied Uncle Raspberry.
"Hitin' a mule wlf a fence rail ain' no
argument, nuther, but it gits action."
