NEWS FROM MEXICO.
Rev. Egbert W. Smith, D. D. ...
The following letter dated July 24,
has just been received from Rev. Jas.
u. sneiny, secretary of our Mexican
Mission. It will 'be read with the
keenest interest, especially at this
time:
"Dear Dr. Smith: Messrs. R. C. Morrow
and H. L. Ross have just returned
from a trip through the larger part of
our Mexican field, visiting the native
brethren, attending day school examinations
and engaging in relief work.
They report the work of the Mission
holding together remarkably well. Not
a single native worker has been lost

THE PRESBYTERIA
aiul the people are hungry for the gospel.
In the relief work they were able
to help a great many sufferers, but the
needs will be even greater until nor
iuuj conditions are restored.
"Our last word from the Executive
Committee, in accordance with instructions
from the State Department at
Washington, was that we keep our
families out of Mexico and that the
men uso their own discretion about
visiting the lield. We have been able
to supervise the work in a general way

Number of visits to outside places 73
Number of pastoral visits 934
Number of members received on

Number of infants baptized .... 30
These figures do not include the
work in Dallas and Central Texas
l'resbyteries. Tiiey do indicate a most
strenuous and prolonged effort on the
part of the few engaged in the work.
For instance, they show a pastoral
visit for almost every member within
three months' time, which is not far
from what is done every quarter.
The "outside" visits show a live
evangelistic interest.
The number of members received on
profession of faith indicates probably
the largest harvest for any corresponding
quarter in the history of the work.
The number of infants baptized
gives hope for the future.
In short, this work is at once the
glory and the shame of the Southern
h*resoyterlan Church.

MAGNETIC CITY.
In a valley or flat surrounded by
that mountain range, of which Mt.
Mitchell is the crowning peak, lies a
settlement called Magnetic City, on
account of the magnetism possessed by
iron ore dug from this region. As
it is eight miles to the nearest railroad,
the work of this mine did not prove
profitable, so it was discontinued.

A mission school was taught here
the past session. Our Sabbath school
is in a prosperous condition. Six members
received badge pins for not having
missed a Sabbath this year, three
for not missing this quarter. Last Sunday
we had Children's Day. It was
the first exercise of the kind many
had ever witnessed. Two dollars was
sent as our contribution to the Japanese
Mission. We trust we may reap
great benefit from this lesson in giving.
Seventeen children have recited

Shorter since last October. Sunday
afternoon I organized a Sunday
school about two miles from here. The
people are taking great interest. At
first it was held in an old store, but
the afternoons proving warm and sultry,
we now gather under the nearby
shade, and use the side of the house
for writing the subject and Golden

girls sewing, crocheting and embroidery.
This was made possible through the
kindness of the IMizpah Bible class of
the First Presbyterian church of Topeka,
Kans.
We are endeavoring to build a
teacher's home near the church, so as
to enlarge the work aiid make it more
permanent.
We would appreciate a contribution
from any society or friend wishing
to aid in a cause that would be uplifting
in both a literary and religious
way.
