ed to take a more active part in the
life of Western nations, either Pro
testant or Catholic, and that it is
necessary to come to an understanding
with them in order to avoid evils pro
duced by religions intolerance. The
newly planned commission of cardi
nals will pay attention to yearnings
for a unity which from time to time
manifest themselves in the Orthodox
Churches, and to cultivate friendly re
lations with the Anglican Church.
"One of the most ditlicult tasks of
the new commission will be a thor
ough re-examination of the arguments
pro and con on the validity of Angli
can ordinations. The bull 'apostolical
sedis' by Leo X has settled in the
negative the program of that validity,
but generally theological schools as
sume a more favorable attitude to
ward acknowledgment of the validity
of Anglican orders, and the new com
mission of cardinals will carefully
ponder the reasons set forth by Rus
sian and Anglican c^ivines against the
decision of Pope Leo X. The friend
ship of the Anglican Church is appre
ciated by Home, for sho may be as a
link of union between Roman Catholi
cism and Russian Orthodoxism.
"The movement toward Christian
unity started by the World Conference
excited interest and sympathies in
Rome, and Cardinal Gasparri, in the
name of the pope, wrote to the secre
tary of the World Conference, Robert
H. Gardiner, several letters which
seem to reproduce the style and the
feelings of Leo XIII. Hut that cor
respondence would not have had any
tangible results if the Conference hadr
not met with a great success in Rus
sia. The official organ of the Holy
Synod has praised the initiative of the
World Conference and exhorted the
Russian hierarchy to give their co
operation to it."
Dr. Palmieri made public a letter
he had just received from Professor
\V. Ekzempliarski. editor of "The
Christian Thought," in whivli the Rus
sian writer said:
"It is with a feeling of joy that
Russians see their American brothers
take in hand the initiative of Chris
tian unity with energy and assiduity."
"Of course, Rome cannot see with
indifference the growing fiiendship
between Anglican and Orthodoxy,"
Dr. Palmieri declared, "and conse
quently the new commission of cardi
nals will examine whether American
Christianity feels instinctively the
need of harmonizing the various ten
dencies of Christian mind to form a
united Protestantism which would be
the first step toward a united Chris
tianity."
And the desire of all nations shall
come. ? Haggal 2:7.
