there are three church members to
one family; this means that there

REV. J. LEIGHTON STl ART, I>. I>.
Dr. Stuart was licensed and or
dained by East Hanover Presbytery,
but some years ago he transferred
his membership to a Presbytery in
the Chinese Presbyterian Church. Be
cause of his former connection with
East Hanover Presbytery he asked the
privilege of making a statement to
that body.
At his request a committee was
appointed to confer with him, and

minutes of the Presbytery touching
this matter:
The committee to confer with Rev.
I)r. J. heighten Stuart about certain
iharges made in the Princeton Theo
logical Review against his orthodoxy,
after covering the whole matter with
Dr. Stuart, requested him to make
a statement to the Presbytery. After
hearing this statement the Presbytery
expressed its entire confidence in Dr.
Stuart and sympathized with him.
The committee presented the fol
lowing resolution, which was unani
mously adopted by a rising vote, and
the Stated Clerk was directed to send
a copy of this resolution with a rec
ord of the action of the Presbytery
to the Princeton Theological Review
and the Church papers, with request
for publication, a copy to be sent to
Dr. Stuart and to Dr. S. H. Chester,
of the Assembly's Foreign Mission
Committee:
The Presbytery of East Hanover,
having heard a full and frank state
ment of Dr. J. L,. Stuart, of Peking,
China, touching certain charges made
against his orthodoxy by Dr. Griffith
Thomas in an article in the Prince
ton Theological Review of October,
1921, hereby declares its entire con
fidence in Dr. Stuart's loyalty to the
Standards of our Church, our belief
in his genuine sincerity, and our cor
dial endorsement of the work in which
he is now engaged in China.
PI. EX TV OF WHITE SPACE.
Several specimens of church ad
vertisements have been received at
the office of the Stewardship Com
mittee. Nearly all of them are very
attractive. The favorite space seems
to be about five or six inches, two
columns wide. The subject of the
sermon is usually displayed in large
type and the hours of service and
name of the minister below in smaller
type. All advertisers agree that there
should be plenty of white space
around a very little reading matter
to attract attention. A few weeks
ago a newspaper reporter called the
attention of the writer to an adver
tisement of a Presbyterian Church,
which he said had been running for
six months without change. It was a
little four or five line notice in the
paper each Saturday and read:
" Presbyterian Church,
Rev. John Doe, pastor. Preaching
at 11:00 A. M. and 8:00 P. M. Sab
bath school at 10:00 A. M. Prayer
meeting Wednesday at 7:30 P. M."
Never a change, even when the
hours of service changed or a visitor
occupied the pulpit. It was wasting
money.
For tho Minister.
In some of the churches are stin
to be found in the pews a card to be
filled in by the stranger or newcomer,
with space also provided for informa
tion on the illness or other trouble of
a member. The card is supposed to
be dropped in the collection plate or
handed to one of the church officers.
Nearly all of the larger churches now
provide for this information on the
weekly church bulletin. Very often
the cards are not in the pews, but a
church bulletin properly distributed
is always in the hands of every
churchgoer each Sunday. It is a good
idea.
Al'THORSHII' CONTEST FOIl 1922.
Following the Instructions of the
Assembly, we announced an open
competition for a prize volume for
1921 to be published at our expense.
Wide publicity was Riven to the con
ditions of the contest, and December
31, 1921, was fixed as the last date
on which manuscripts would be re*
ceived. A number of manuscripts
wero submitted and a select commit
tee examined the material quite care
fully without knowing the identity
of the authors. They reported none
