"We, the members of the Confer
ence, joyfully confess our faith in,
and renew our allegiance to, God the
Father Almighty, Jesus Christ, His
Son, our Lord and Saviour, who loved
us and gave Himself for our sins, and
the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver
of life; and acknowledge our loyalty
to the Holy Scriptures as the supreme
guide of faith and conduct, and to
the fundamental Christian beliefs
held by the churches to which we sev
erally 'belong. The Conference, how
ever, is not constituted as a church
council with authority to pass upon
questions of doctrine and of -church
polity or to draw up a credal or doc
trinal statement of any kind. While
the Conference believes it to be a mat
ter of vital importance that the
Church of Christ in China should bo
established on a basis of true faith
and sound doctrine it recognizes that
the authority to determine what are
the essential affirmations of the Chris
tian faith lies with the several church
es of which those attending the Con
ference are members. Any National
Christian Council which may be ap
pointed by this Conference will not
in any sense be a church council and,
therefore, not competent to exercise
ecclesiastical functions. It will be an
advisory body which will seek to carry
forward the work of this Conference
and to bring the representatives of
the different churches and missions
in China together in order that they
may mutually enrich one another
through common counsel, and will
take action in matters of common in
terest only when it has reason to be
lieve that the action taken will be
in accordance with the wishes of the
co-operating bodies."
Accounts of the meetings just to
hand tell us that the above resolution
was seconded by Mr. D. E. Hoste,
Director of the China Inland Mission,
who was one of those suggesting that
a doctrinal statement be drawn up for
the National Christian Council. Mr.
Hoste is reported to have said that
"it would be manifestly impossible for
so large a gathering to agree on a
more detailed statement and that, un
like the man who, after he got a
cheese, wanted the moon, he was very
thankful for the cheese." The paper
goes on to say: "That the resolution
was passed by a rising vote, after
which there was a spontaneous sing
ing of the doxology of praise."
AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY.
The biggest year of Bible circula
tion since the high levels of the war
period is reported by the American
Bible Society.
The total number of volumes cir
culated during the year was 4,855,
464, which is more than a million in
excess of the distribution of the pra
ceding year. The largest increase Is
shown in China, where 2,362,730
were circulated. From Japan, the
Near East and all of Latin America
there has come an increased demand
so great that the society has been
unable to meet it.
During the year the society has
been busy with many important trans
lation programs. The revised Span
ish New Testament has been com
pleted and will be ready for distribu
tion during the coming year. Trans
lation work has gone forward also
in Luragoli for missions in British
East Africa; in Quechua for the Bo
livian Indians; in Zulu for the black
people of South Africa; in K'pelle
for use in Liberia. In China large
parts of the Scriptures have been Is
sued in the new Phonetic Script, which
is a simplified written form endorsed
and promoted by the government.
