THE SUNDAY SCHOOL
DANIKL. AND THE LIONS.
July 23, 1922. Dan. 6:1-28.
This is a familiar story, but be
cause it is so familiar its full mean
ing may be overlooked.
Darius had captured the city of
Babylon while the drunken king Bol
shazzar foolishly feasted with his
princess. Belsliazzar was put to death
and Darius seized the throne. In or
ganizing the government of the coun
try he appointed one hundred and
twenty princes to govern the country,
and over these he set three presi
dents. He made Daniel first of the
presidents, because of his high char
acter.
The other presidents became jeal
ous of him. There were two reasons,
no doubt, for their Jealousy. One
was that he was a captive foreigner
of the despised Jewish race. The
other was that he was too honest
for them. He would not do wrong
and would not sanction any wrong
on their part.
They were anxious to get rid of
him. To do this they took the princes
into their counsel. They tried to find
some charge that they could prefer
against him, but their search was in
vain. It was a wonderful compliment
that they paid, and it was well de
served.
The only hope that they had was
that they might in some way bring
the law of their king into conflict
with the law of Daniel's God. They
knew that Daniel would keep the law
of his God. What a good thing it
would be if all of God's professed
people always kept His law, regard
less of the consequences.
The presidents and princes knew
the vanity of even a great king, so
they flattered him by proposing that
all the people should worship him as
a God for thirty days.
Their course shows how one sin
will lead to another. Jealousy led
them to determine upon murder, for
though Daniel should be put to death
by the king's order, they would be
guilty of his murder. To accomplish
their purpose they lied to the king.
They said, "all the presidents" and
the other officers named had united
In the petition, but of course they
had not consulted Daniel. He would
never have joined in ouch a petition.
Misled by their flattery and not
realizing their motive, the king signed
the decree. Then these deceivers set
themselves to watch Daniel. He did
not let the decree have any effect
upon his worship. It had been his
custom to pray with his window open
towards Jerusalem, for he felt that
that was pre-eminently God's earthly
dwelling place.
That was Just what his enemies ex
pected. They soon reported it to the
king, and knowing how he felt toward
Daniel, they reminded him of his de
cree and also of the law binding even
the king, that no law once decreed
by the king could be changed.
The king realized his mistake, and
tried hard to find some way out of
It. He did not have the courage to
say that he was wrong and correct
the wrong. He reminds us of Herod
and his oath to Salome.
Daniel's cruel enemies forced the
king to action and compelled him to
cast Daniel Into the lions' den.
The king realissed that Daniel's God
was powerful and merciful, though
we have no reason to believe that he
recognised Him as the only true God.
He ?aid to him with a strong fall?,
