might be carried back to Jerusalem.
There were nearly 60,000 of these
returning captives. They hart 1,411
horses, camels and mules, and 6,720
asses. All of these animals were
needed, no doubt, to carry their sup
plies and baggage. So most of the
people had to walk. They had to go
between 800 and 1,000 miles, so it
must have been a journey of several
months, and it must have been ac
companied by many hardships. And
their hardships were not over when
they reached Jerusalem. That city
and the others to which they returned
were in ruins. They had no homes
and no crops from which to reap har
vests. Homes had to be built and
crops planted.
At the beginning of the seventh
month, probably from the time they
started from Babylonia, the people,
an soon it seems as they were located
in the various cities to which they
had returned, gathered In Jerusalem
They asked (Nehetnlah 8) for the
reading of the law of God, and then
they rebuilt the altar of sacrifice and
offered burnt offerings upon it.
The people began at once to make
preparation for the building of the
temple, and gave liberally for this
purpose. In the second month of the
second year after their return to Je
rusalem, the foundation of the tem
ple was laid. If the dimensions given
by Cyrus were carried out, this tem
ple was larger than that of Solomon,
nut it wag a plain, cheap building
compared with that one, which was
probably the most costly building ever
erected in the history of the world.
There was great rejoicing on the
part of most of the people, because
the house of God was to be rebuilt,
but there was great mourning on the
part of some of the old people who
remembered the glory of the former
temple, when they realized that this
one would be so inferior to the old.
There were dwelling in the land of
Judah and Israel a mixed race of peo
ple which had sprung from the mix
ture of the Jews who had not been
carried away captive, and the heathen
people whom Nebuchadnezzar had
sent into the land to take possession
of it. They claimed to worship God,
though at the same time they "served
their own gods."
These people wanted to join with
the Jews in building the temple. What
motive prompted them to make that
request we are not told. The Jews
would not let them take part In the
work, because they were heathen.
This incensed them, and they tried
to take their spite out on them by
sending false reports abort them to
the king of Babylon, accusing them
of planning rebellion against him in
rebuilding the walls of the city.
Cyrus had died and Artaxerxes was
now on the throne.
The king replied to this letter, or
dering that work on the temple and
the wall be continued. Under Zerub
babel the work on the temple and
the wall was resumed. The Baby
lonish governor of the province in
which Judah was included came and
demanded their authority for doing
so. They referred him to the decree
of king Cyrus. He sent hl3 report to
Darius, who was then on the throne
of Babylon. The king had the re
cords searched, and found the decree
of Cyrus. His reply to the governor,
Tntnai, instead of authorizing him to
put a stop to the work, directed him
to give the Jews al) the aid needed,
and to pay all expenses out of the tri
bute due the king frem his province.
The temple was completed, and at
the time of the Feast of the p'assover
was dedicated to God. There was
great rejoicing offered, and "the Lord
had made them Joyful."
