THE SUNDAY SCHOOL
THE BKTUKN FROM EXILE.
Aug. 20, 1922. Ezra 7:l-8:3G.
The Temple had been rebuilt in
Jerusalem under Zerubbabel, though
it was twenty-two years before it was
completed and dedicated. For fifty
eight years we hear nothing more of
the Jews of the Temple.
Artaxerxes Is now king of Babylon,
Among the Jews who had remained in
Babylon there had arisen of the
priestly family one who was very
learned in the law. His name was
Kara.
This priest-scribe asked the king to
let him go to Jerusalem. The king
granted his leiuest, but seeniod t?)
have had some doubt about his being
able to make the journey. Ezra told
him he could do so safely, as the good
hand of God would be upon him.
The king gave Ezra a letter, which
not only granted him the privilege of
going to Jerusalem, but granted the
same privilege to any ofc the other
Jews who wanted to go. The letter
authorized Ezra to carry with him th?
gold and silver which the king and
his counsellors gave for the Temple,
and it authorized him to receive any
other money that might be given him
by any of the people. The king also
directed the treasurers of his prov
inces through which Ezra would pass
to furnish him whatever might be
needed by him up to $200,000 in silver
and large supplies of provisions. The
letter also carries a decree that none
of those who serve about the Temple
shall be subject to taxes by any of
the king's officers.
Further than that, the letter re
quired that all the people in the land
of Israel shall keep the laws of the
God of heaven, and that, if any one
should break them, he should be pun
ished according to the judgment of
Ezra.
Ezra stops to thank God for His
goodness and mercy, and that the
hand of the Lord his God was upon
him.
Ezra gathered quite a large com
pany about him to go to Jerusalem.
Before starting he proclaimed a fast,
which was accompanied by prayer. He
and his fellow pilgrims prayed espe
cially that they might have a safe
journey. Most men under such cir
cumstances would have asked the king
to furnish them a military guard for
such a journey through a country in
fested by robbers and hostile peoples.
This question seems to have been
discussed with the king. Possibly he
had offered to furnish such a guard.
But Ezra had told him that he would
not need a guard for, said he, the
hand of God would be upon him and
those who were with him to protect
them.
Ezra selected twelve men into
whose care he committed the gifts of
the king and the people. It was a
rich treasure. It consisted of $1,300,
000 in silver, silver vessels worth .
$200,000, $3,000,000 in gold, and
numerous vessels for use in the ;
