NEHKMIAH'S PRAYER.
August 27, 1922.
Neh. 1:1-11.
The Children of Israel, who re
turned to Judah and Jerusalem, did
not live as they ought to have done
in some respects. One of the things
that they did, which was directly con
trary to God's commands, was to
marry heathen wives, as many of
them did. Some years before our
present lesson, Ezra had corae from
llabylon and had instituted many re
forms. He required the men to give

up their heathen wives among other
things.
Nehemiah still lived in Babylonia,
and occupied the position of cup
bearer to the king in his summer pal
ace in Rliush tun, which was about 300
miles east of Babylon. His brother,
Hanani, and Home others who had
been to Jerusalem returned to Baby
lonia. Nehemiah enquired as to con
ditions at Jerusalem, and was told
that the walls of Jerusalem had been
broken down by their enemies, and
that the people were in a bau plight.
This troubled Nehemiah very great
ly, and wo are told of three things
that he did. He wept, he prayed, he
acted.
He Wept. When he learned of the
condition of his fellow-countrymen,
his sympathy wont out to them, but
it was not a mere passing thought
that occupied his mind. In imagina
tion he made their sufferings hip own.
This made him weep. Many people
weep over their own misfortunes, and
some weep over those of others. A
skilled writer may bring tears to the
eyes of his readers, as he pictures the
woes of his characters. But this
awakening of the emotions does not
amount to anything, if they are not
given the opportunity of materializ
ing themselves.
He Prayed. Nehemiah was uaxioua
to do something for his people, but
what could he, a captive in far off
Babylonia, do? In his own helpless
ness he turned to the great source of
help. He went right to God. The :
particular words and expressions of !
this prayer are all well worth careful j
study. They will help us in our
prayers.
First, there is adoration. He speaks
of some of the characteristics of Cod.
showing why he i;oes to Him for help.
He then pleads with God to hoar him.
Then he makes confession of sni. It
was natural for him to refer to the
Pins of the Children of Tsrael in Ju
dah, because of which they had got
ten into so much trouble. Hut he
goes further than that and confesses
his own sins. He cannot come to God
pleading any merit by which he can
claim an answer to his prayers. He
must depend entirely upon His love
and mercy.
Nehemiah makes a strong plea
based upon God's promises. God has
promised that, when we come to Him
in prayer in the right attitude, He
will answer us. He has made a cove
nant promise to that effect, and Ha
never fails to keep His promise. He
makes his plea also upon the basis of
what God has already done for His
people. He has delivered them from
captivity and has carried them to Ju
dah. Nehemiah says that certainly
God will give them what is further
needed. We can make no stronger
plea for God's blessings than that
based upon what He already has done
for us. "He that spared not His own
Son, but delivered Him up for us all,
how shall He not with Hiifi also freely
give us all things?" ? (Rom 8:32.)
Another thing to notice about this
prayer is that Nehemiah prayed for I
something definite, and that he recog- j
nized the fact that God would in all '
probability use human instrumental- 1
ity in answering it. He believed that
it must be through the king, as God's
human agent, that His answer would
come. He prayed that he might find
favor in the sight of the king..
