their people were enemies of the
Jews. But Nehemiah paid no atten

Jerusalem. He seems not to have
said anything to the Jews at lirst as
to his purpose. He spent three days
in the city and then went out at night
to make a survey of conditions. It
is very well to have all needed infor
mation and plans well laid before try
ing to get others to undertake a dlf
ficult task.
Nehemiali, after ho had gotten the
information needed, talked to the peo
ple, calling attention to the condi
tion of the wall. Ho also told them
how God had helped him, and of what
the king had done. It was not neces
sary now for him to make any sugges
tion. The people themselves proposed
that they should build.
As soon as their enemies heard of
their plans to rebuild the wall, they
made fun of them, and then accused
them of preparing to rebel against
the king. Neheiniah told them that
God would help, but that they had
nothing to do with it. The work was
divided out among the various fam
ilies, including many people from
the other towns where the Jews livn''
for they were all interested in build
ing up their capital city.
Sanballat continued to make fun of
the Jews and their efforts, saying
that even a fox could break down any
wall they could build. There are a
great many people who have not the
courage to stand being made fun of.
but Nehemiali only went to God in
prayer. He was not discouraged, but
went right on with their work.
When Sanballat found that the
work was going on, regardless of his
mocking, he and his allies got mad,
and agreed to go against Jerusalem
and stop the work by force. Nehe
miah knew the weakness of his peo
ple. He said, "Nevertheless, we
made our prayer unto our God, and
set a watch against them day and
night." He was asking God's help,
but he did not fail to do his best to
protect the city against its enemies.
God expects us to work as well as
pray.
Then there came trouble from with
in. The people got tired, and wanted
to stop. To add to the trouble men from
other towns came and advised their
fellow townsmen to return to their
homes in order to defend them
against the enemies that were about
to make an advance into the land.
This must have appealed to them very
strongly.
Nehemiah answered all who op
posed the work by strengthening the
guards, until he had half of the men
on duty, while the other half worked
on the wall. He urged them all not
to be afraid, but to call upon the
Lord and fight. Even those who were
working kept their weapons In hand
ready to fight at a moment's notice.
The Jews were having a hard time.
Naturally, they could not do anything
to provide for their own necessities
while working on the wall. Ther^
were those among them who were
ready to take advantage of their ne
cessity and lend them what they
needed at usurious rates. This dis
couraged them. Nehemiah called the
usurers together and made them re
lievo the people of their burdens.
There are often selfish people who
will take advantage of the needs of
others or of their country, If they
can only get some profit for them
selves.

Sanballat would not give up liis op
position to the rebuilding of the walls.
He had failed in every attempt he had
made, but ho would try again. Ho
wrote Nehemiah a letter, saying that
it was reported that ho was getting
ready to lead the people into rebel
lion against the kiug of Babylon, and
declare himself king of Jerusalem. He
invited Nehemiah to como down and
meet him and talk the matter over.
His purpose evidently was to get hold
of Nehemiah and make a prisoner of
him. ' ? ru vv
Nehemiah replied to him that his
charges were not truo and that he
could not leave the great work he was
doing. No doubt he feared an attack
from Sanballat, so he prayed to God
for strength.
Then one came to Nehemiah in the
guise of a friend and told him that
their enemies were going to come
against the city, and urged him to go
and shut himself up in the Temple
for safety. Nehemiah soon recog
nized him as the hired agent of San
