L. Flagley. Publishers, Fleming H.
Ilevell Company, New York. Price,
$1. This book gives suggestions for
plans for work in a congregation for
a whole year. While no pastor or
church would care to adopt all of the
proposed plans, the book will be
found interesting, suggestive and
helpful to any one who really wants
his church to do definite and effective
work.
Satan: His Personality, Power and
Overthrow ? By Edward M. Bounds.
Publishers, Fleming H. Revell Com
pany, New York. Price, $1.25. He
who reads this Scriptural treatment of
the subject of this book will have no
doubt of the personality of the devil,
of his power over the individual, in
the church and in the world. Nor
will there be any question of the skil
fulness of his methods. But the reader
will also find that there is a defense
by which he can protect himself from
the attacks of the great enemy of
souls and of all that is good.
The Ijure of the Looptinl Skin ? By
Josephine Hope Westervelt. Pub
lishers, Fleming H. Revell Company,
New York. Price, $1.75. This is
a rare book. It is just the book that
will grip any bos* or young man, in
deed, any one who reads it. A fine
college graduate goes to Africa on a
scientific expedition. He is a skeptic
in religious matters with almost a
contempt for missionaries. He has
all the excitement that comes from
lions, leopards and other big game.
He came in contact with missionaries,
saw their lives and work, learned their
spirit and inspiration, especially in
the case of an attractive young lady

The. Victory of God ? By Rev.
James Reid. Publishers, George H.
Doran Company, New York. Price,
$2. This is a volume of twenty-five
sermons. They are a simple, clear
and strong presentation of some ot
the great fundamental truths of the
gospel of salvation. They are inter
esting and helpful to any one who
will read them, but they will prove
especialy suggestive. Many sermons
are of very little value, as they are
read, but these are different. They
read so well that one only wishes lie
could have heard them a? their au
thor preached them.
The Way of the Cross ? By Rev. J.
Gregory Mantle, D. D. Publishers,
Fleming H. Revell Company, New
York. Price, $1.60. This book is
vigorously written and yet it is of a
style so simple and plain that it is
attractive to any reader. It treats
of the cross of Christ in its relation
to man in all of its different phases.
It is a sane and sound treatment of
the great fundamental doctrine of
salvation through a crucified Re
deemer.
Presbyterianism ? A Heritage and
a Challenge ? By Rev! Walter L. Lin
gle, D. D., of Union Theological Semi
nary, Richmond. Publishers, The
Presbyterian Committee of Publica
tion, Richmond, Va. Price, 15 cents.
The value of this little book is not
to be judged by its size or its price.
It is a concise, clear statement of
some of the most fundamental things
that every Presbyterian ought to
know. It is suited to people of any
age, but it is specially adapted to
young people. It will be well if every
woman's auxiliary, every Sunday
school class, every Christian Endeavor
Society should make it a study book.
It will prove of value to every mem
ber o? the church.
The Carpenter nnd His Kingdom ?
11 y Alexander Irvine. Publishers,
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York.
Pr.ce, $1.50. This is a layman's study
of the life of Christ. It is not so
much the study of His history, as it
is a study of what the gospels, and
especially His own teachings show ot
the characteristics of the Christ. It
is written in an attractive style, wfilcn
is simple and clear, and devoid ot
technicalities. It is both interesting
arid helpful.
Tlio Hells of the Blue Pagoda ? By
Jean Carter Cochran. Publishers,.
The Westminster Press, Philadelphia.
Price, $1.76. A wonderfully Interest
ing "story, a romance that is as fas
cinating as one would care to find.
The author says that the story Is Im
aginary, hut that many true incidents
are woven into it. Many striking
characteristics of the Chinese of many
classes are presented in a way that
shows fne true Chinese spirit. It also
shows much of the romance, the self
sacrifice, the danger, the success. of
mission work. It will hold the In
terest of the reader from the start
to the finish, as he reads of the won
derful experiences of the infant
daughter of a rich Chinaman, stolen
by beggars, rescued by missionaries,
who found that she had forgotten all
about her parents. She was educated
in America, returned to her native
city, though ignorant of the fact that
she had ever been there, to do mis
sion work, and was finally restored
to her mother who had mourned her
many years. Every missionary II
brary and every home should have ft
copy of this book.
.1 e a 11 n I e - Marie's Triumph ? By
Clara E. Laughlin. Publishers, Flem
ing H. Revell Company. New York.
Price. $1.25. This is a very inter
esting story, the scene of which Is
laid in Paris, and it covers the whole
period of the late war extending
through the three years following it.
It does deal with the general affairs
of the war, hut is a story of cer
tain individuals, who lived in Paris.
It has in it patriotism, pathos, cour
age and love. It lets us in, as it were,
behind the scenes to see humanity in
this great crisis.

FREEDOM FROM
LAXATIVES
Discovery by Scientists Has Replaced
Them.
Pills and salts give temporary re
lief from constipation only at the ex
pense of permanent injury, says an
eminent medical authority.
Science has found a newer, better
way? a means as simple as Nature^
Itself.
In perfect health a natural lubricant
keeps the food wnste soft and moving..
But when constipation exists this nat
ural lubricant is not sufficient. Medi
cal authorities have found that the
gentle lubricating action of Nujol most
closely resembles that of Nature's own
lubricant. As Nujol is not a laxative
it cannot gripe. It is in no sense a
medicine. And like pure water It Is
harmless nnd pleasant. N
Nujol is prescribed by physicians f
used in leading hospitals. Get a bottle
