Idealism. The greatest need of our
youth to-day is for high ideals and
noble aspirations.
An old cobbler had his home by
the side of the sea, and he was seen
to rise from his bench, stand at his
door, and look out upon the sea.
Finally some one asked him why it
was that he so frequently looked out
upon the sea, and he replied, "If I
did not look out upon the sea, I could
not return to my cobbling."
That is what our youth needs. High
ideals to keep them steady when the

grind Is on, In the monotony and
strain of life.
The other day I was In a great i
dustrial city, the city of Pittsburg.
I stood upon a high vantage poln>
and saw its spires pointing heaven
ward ? not its church spires, but its
industrial spires ? and I said, "This
is truly a great industrial city."
A few days later I was on the top
floor of a great hotel in Seattle, over
looking Puget Sound, with all of its
activity, and I heard the hum and
bustle of an active city, and I said,
"This is truly a great commercial
city."
A few years ago, at the beginning
of the war, we stood before great
maps and wo imagined we saw two
great lines of steel stretching between
Belgium and France on the one slab
and Germany on the other. We said,
"These are wonderful rows of steel."
Industrial city? Commercial city?
Rows of steel? Let us draw a little
closer.
I went down into the heart of that
industrial city and I saw men with
naked waists, with sweat pouring from
their bodies, throwing coal into great
furnaces, and I said, "If these men
had not the will to work, where would
be your industry, for industry is built
upon the decision and the will of men
to work."
Commercial city? Suppose some
thing happened to the integrity of
the young men of Seattle, or to the
high honor of these men. Where woul-1
be its commerce? Commerce would
go crashing to the ground, for com
merce is built upon integrity, upon
high honor, upon the spirit of confi
dence which men have in each other.
Rows of steel? Let us go up a lit
tle closer. The boys are running across
No Man's Land. A young man drops
to the ground, and his last cry is
"God," and he goes west.
Another boy ia brought low by a
shell, and the last word he utters Is
simply "Mother," and passes on to the
beyond.
A third boy, the chum of another,
is brought to the ground, and as hi3
friend stoops over him for but a brlel
moment, he simply says, "Kiss me,
Bob," and closes his eyes.
Rows of steel? Rows of Steel?
"God! Mother! Kiss me, Bob!" are
very human terms. No, not rows of
steel. Steel never won the war. If
steel had won the war, Germany would
have won the war in the first few
weeks, for she had the steel, and steel
upon steel.
No! I will tell you what won the
war. Manhood won the war. High
courage won the war. Noble aspira
tions won the war. Nothing under
heaven would have taken the Ameri
can boys to Europe but their high
idealism, and these were the qualities
that brought victory.
Integrity! Noble aspirations! High
ideals! Honor! These are the quali
ties which make a nation great, and
because Scouting with proper leader>
ship develops these qualities In the

From the birth of the
nation down to the pres
ent time, Philadelphia has
always been pre-eminent
ly the Bible-making cen
ter of the United States.
Of the twenty promi
nent publishers engaged
in Bible-making during
the first one hundred
years of our national ex
istence, ten were located
in Philadelphia and three
or four were sit ua ted
within a radius of 40
miles qf this city.
It followed, therefore,
that Bible publishers, such
as the Holman Company,
set a standard which they
maintained and aimed to
improve upon as their
cumulative efforts made
this possible.
Many improvements in
Bible-making had their
origin in the Holman
plant, due to the fact that
the Holman people an
imbued with the old
Philadelphia spirit.
Within the past year, ax
artisans have rounded out
a period of fifty years of
continuous Holman Bibie
service, and others are
nearing the same goal.
Naturally, we ate very
proud of this record.
We will endeavor to
be worthy of your con
