ing the room to its capacity, with
people standing around the walls who
could not get to the tables. After
the banquet Christian Endeavor dem
onstrations were put on, which were
unique and instructive as well.
On Sunday morning almost 300
were in the Sunrise Prayer Service,
which was held in the dome of the
University of Tennessee building. This
service was led by Secretary Evans,
with Dr. Ware, pastor of the Fifth
Avenue Christian church of the con
vention city, as a speaker. The Y.
M. C. A. provided a brass quartet,
which rendered such exceptional fine
music as to very greatly influence the
spirit of the entire service.
More than $1,200 was raised for
?
the coming year's work, and Mr. Bert
Jones was unanimously called as the
Field Secretary of Tennessee for six
months of his time. A vote of confi
dence in the All-South Extension Com
mittee and its work was unanimously
passed. 9
One of the outstanding speakers of
the convention was Sunshine Hawks,
a Chautauqua lecturer of fifty-four
years' experience.
The Northwest District of the State
was awarded a banner for being the
first district in the State to reach its
registration quota, and another ban
ner because of having done the best
work of any district in the State. The
Memphis City Union was awarded a
banner for being the first city union
in the State to reach its registration
quota. The Chattanooga City Union
coal was more than five times that
of some of the other city unions, yet
it not only reached its goal, but passed
it, turning in 146 advance registra
tions. The Chattanooga District reg
istered 184, and had 85 Endeavorers
in the convention.
Twenty-four of the students of
Johnson Bible College attended the
closing session, and joined with al
most fifty others in standing before
the great convention in a declaration
of their plans to give themselves in
full-time Christian service. Seven new
volunteers expressed their desire at
this service to become Life Work Re
cruits. This decision service, led by
Secretary Evans, followed a challeng
ing message given by F. L. Freet, of
Ohio.
The 1923 convention is to be held
in Dyersburg.

America is a name to conjure with
in the Near East because American
relief workers have gone there not
for what they could get, but for what
they could give. Near East Relief
has no political motives in any of
this philanthropic work. The money
now being used to save the lives of
these children of the Near East, and
to train them for leadership in the
trades and professions, will prove an
Investment yielding hundredfold re
turns to the world at large, and es
pecially in the development of the
prosperity of the Near East. Like
any investment in childhood and edu
cation, it is a strategic use of money,
which will richly bless the world,
strengthening international good will
for centuries to come.
