From the Georgia Grange.]
Horticiilluro.
Report read before Mount Ida Grange, No. 333.
by sister Ella Dicksos, August 12oli, 1376.
Brothers and Sisters of the Order :
At your last meeting we were appoin
ted to prepare a Horticultural Report,
and read it at this session, before the
Grange. We, your committee, thought
it best to have this report fresh, and,
therefore, delayed making necessary
calls until last week, and then could
not from various causes get around to
all. This, too, is a season of the year
when but little can be said of gardens,
especially. Nearly everybody had a
fine garden in the spring, but since
then some have suffered much for rain.
We find a greater yield of Irish pota
toes than any other vegetable. There
were certainly more potatoes grown
this year than ever before, and many
are planting for use in the winter. It
might not be improper to suggest that
were we more careful in the selection of
our garden seeds we would find it fully
worth the attending trouble.
Now when we come to speak of flow
ers and flower gardens, that most re
fined and refining department of horti
cultural labor, we are quite sorry to
say that very few in our bounds mani
fest any interest whatever. It is true
that almost every family, either white
or black, has its Jack Bean and Madei
ra vine, its poor Wandering Jew or
Jewess, and Down Hills of Life, but
that is not showing our appreciation of
the well nigh endless world of flowers.
We are inclined to thir*k that were you
to watch the homes of our Granger
wives and daughters, you could find
some palliation at least for this appa
rently careless and negligent habit,
when you see them busy as bees from
early dawn till late of evening in the
performance of other more exacting du
ties, and those more calculated, as an
elderly gentleman once remarked, “to
make the pot bile.” You may say that
there are still enough spare moments
to cultivate a small yard, filled with the
rarest and most beaut’ful specimens, if
we only had the will. The old maxim
must be true, and so we will not hesi
tate a moment to admit it. However
fondly we may wish to iiuger and dwell
upon this charming part of our subject,
we must hurry on to say something of
fruit., which, if less ornamental, is as
suredly more useful.
Asa general complaint, not only in
our Grange, but in our county as well,
there is almost an unparalleled scarcity
of all varieties of fruits. There are a
few peaches, very few pears, and not an
average crop of apples. Most of the
pear trees are dead. Is there nothing
we can do for this excellent fruit tree
to make it longer lived ?
The peach trees suffered much by
the late spring, a great many limbs and
some entire trees being killed. Some
say there is an apple blight over the
country, others that the cold in March
caused the death of so many trees.
We do not know what the trouble is,
but are certain that they are dying
quite rapidly, and after the apples are
full grown. We have known trees
look perfectlv healthy above ground
when the roots were all dead. Do we
not feel anxious enough for this luxury
to make strenuous exertions to know
what thus stealthily robs us of so
much P There is much eomplaiut of
some varieties of grapes rotting this
year, though we believe that the scup
pernong is doing well. Melons, gen
erally speaking, are moderately fine
with a few forty pounders. Our report
is necessarily meager as to things
planted and grown.
Friends, Patrons, why are we so ex
tremely slothful about household adorn
ment and home pleasures ? It is really
strange to see bow puzzled farmers are
to know what causes such a longing to
leave home in all the children; why the
boys want to go to town, and the girls
to visit their cross old aunties, or their
forty-eieventh cousins, or anywhere
else, just to get off, when there is no
effort at all made by them to make the
old home attractive. This, too, is so
easily done, no matter how humble the
dwelling. There is a continual cen
tripetal influence exerted over a family
by furnishing only a few comforts that
cost a mere trifle.
Try growing a goodly variety of
fruits about you, and see if your chil
dren are so eager to wander from the
dear parental roof. We do not think
they will, but you will be pleased to
enlarge your experiment. We can,
with very little expense and trouble,
have something to eat all the year
round, beside the usual three meals of
meat and bread, and it is these small
things and similar ones, that make the
little ones love home, and the kind
providers for their tiny wants. If as
children, they love the dark and the
bright spots around the cottage ’neath
the vines, the happy hours so swiftly
passed there, we venture to say there
will be little change in the grown up
men and women. But pray, excuse our
tediousness and let the deep interest we
feel in our theme, plead for our forget
fulness. Respectfully submitted to the
Grange.

during the last few years in all parts of the
United States as a positive cui o for Consump

permanent arrangements in Calcutua, India, for
obtaining ’‘Pure Hemp,” and having it extracted
upon its own soil (the climate in America being
too changeable to extract large quantities free
from mildew) These remedies are now prepar
